Why We Still Love Friends.

— Updated on 2 August 2021

2 weeks ago marked 11 years since the last episode of Friends aired and to this day it is still one of the most loved and watched TV series of all time. No matter how many times you’ve seen every episode of every season you still laugh just as hard as you did the first time. But why is it that after 11 years we still love and laugh at our best Friends, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica and Phoebe.

Why We Still Love Joey

Joey, in his own words, is our ‘Ministainer’. “With me you got a minister and an entertainer….I’m a ‘Ministainer’.” Joey is still the slowest to catch onto things, but when he does, his reaction is priceless. Joey gets all the women with his signature catch phrase “How you doin?” and loves to tell people that he is an actor on ‘Days Of Our Lives.’ He is the bachelor of the group, never settling down, always just having fun. Joey is always happy and always has a big smile on his face every time we see him. He is the creator of stupid indoor games like ‘Fireball,’ that although highly dangerous, look extremely fun to play and are highly entertaining to watch. Joey is always there for the other 5, whether they need advice on a weird mole they found on their body, how to get tight leather pants back on, or “pizza toppings and burning sensation when you pee.” Joey is constantly saying before he thinks, which sometimes results in getting himself fired or robbed of all his belongings, and there is never a moment when he isn’t rummaging through Monica and Chandlers fridge looking for something to eat. He is the most loyal and loving friend and can always put a smile on our faces.

Why We Still Love Ross

Ross ‘The Divorcer’ Geller is our scientist. With a love of dinosaurs and of Rachel, he is the intelligent and romantic one of the 6. Ross is always finding himself in a pickled situation, whether it be his first wife being a lesbian, finding out his lesbian ex-wife is pregnant with his child, dealing with Italian guys, saying the wrong name at his second wedding (resulting in his second divorce), yelling at his boss for eating the only good thing going on in his life (his sandwich), getting drunk in Vegas and getting married and then divorced for a third time, or getting Rachel pregnant. Ross never fails to disappoint us with a laugh and never fails to bore the hell out of the other 5 with dinosaur crap. We love to laugh at Ross’ failed misfortune and we love his persistency with convincing everyone that, “we were on a break!” Ross entertains us with his ‘Karartay,’ his keyboard playing and his ability to make a normal situation awkward. We love Ross and never want him out of our lives.

Why We Still Love Rachel

Rachel is our fashionista. Her spoilt demeanour and inability to remember who ordered what is just one of the reasons why we still love her. Rachel’s relationship with Ross constantly tears at our heart strings, and even though we know they end up together (spoilers…) we still get emotional every time they breakup. Rachel’s family members are always popping into our lives every now and then and providing us with a good laugh. Whether it be Gill going after Ross and getting rejected, “I throw myself at you and you say no, how gay are you?” Amy wishing Rachel and Ross die so that she can get custody of Emma, “Ok how about this? If you guys die, and the crazy plate lady dies, then do I get the baby?” or Dr Green yelling at Ross for not marrying his daughter, “You think you can knock up my daughter and not marry her? I’m gonna kill you.” They never seem to leave us without a great memory. Rachel shows us how much a person can change by the people they surround themselves with and we love her to death for that.

Why We Still Love Monica

Monica is our little high maintenance chef. Monica simply cannot deal with an untidy room or an unorganised kitchen. She loves nothing more than to make people like her, and hates nothing more than to lose at any game big or small. She is competitive to say the least and is an extremely sore loser, especially when it come to the ‘Geller Cup’. Monica loves to remind us that she was “Rachel’s formerly fat friend,” in high school, and that she is and always will be the hostess. Besides being Ross little sister and always being the second most loved sibling in the Geller family, she is the self-proclaimed leader of the group. “Ok, lets go team Monica.” Monica is passionate towards her career, which we found out she only chose to pursue because of Chandler, “Hey Chandler do you like your macaroni and cheese?” “Oh yeah it’s really good. You should become a chef.” “Ok!” as well as always being right. Our little “Harmonica” continues to provide us with great memories and good housekeeping rules and that is why we still love her.

Why We Still Love Chandler

Chandler is our funny man. His constant sarcasm and quick wit gives us hours of entertainment. There is never not a laugh when Chandler is around. Chandler never passes up an opportunity to ridicule his friends on the things that they have done, “And Ross? Phone call for you today: Tom Jones. He wants his pants back! And Hornswoggle? What are you dating a character from fragile rock?” Janis is very much a huge part of Chandlers life and we love it evertime she is around. Not because of her unforgettable catch phrase, “OH MY GAWD!” But because she always seems to drive Chandler crazy, causing him to do some hilarious stuff, like get on a flight to Yemen just so he doesn’t have to tell her that he wants to break up. “Hey, when we get to Yemen, can I stay with you?” Chandlers relationship with Monica makes us love him even more. Their constant back and forth banter is all we want to see every day. “You’re a really good kisser.” “Well I have kissed over 4 women…” Chandler is our class clown and we wouldn’t change him one bit.

Why We Still Love Phoebe

Phoebe is our weird musician. Although we don’t like to pick favourites when it comes to these 6, Phoebe has to be one of them. Her wonderfully weird personality and odd choice of lyrics is just one of the many reasons we still love her. She delights us with her unique music and we always enjoy it when we get to hear our favourite song of hers,”Smelly Cat”. Phoebe constantly enlightens our lives with whatever she says, whether that be suggesting to name her niece “Exon” or yelling at the other 5 for not knowing about her roommate Denise, “I talk about her all the time, DENISE!” Phoebes terrible guitar playing and terrible knowledge of chords is why we still love her the most. “I don’t know the actual names of the chords, but I made up names for the way my hand looks while I’m doing them. So then, this is ‘Bear Claw’. Okay umm, ‘Turkey Leg’, and… ‘Old Lady’.” There is never a moment Phoebe doesn’t make us laugh or put the biggest smile on our faces and that is why we still love her.

Friends is a show that, even 11 years after its finale, still has a place in our homes, and we will always love to sit on our couch and hang out with those 6 ‘friends’ of ours time and time again.
