Netflix has a new series debuting this month, and if you’re a fan of hip hop you should be very excited about its arrival. Created by Australian director Baz Luhrmann, The Get Down, which debuts on August 12th, takes place in the Bronx during the late 1970’s. It follows aspiring rapper Ezekiel (Justice Smith) and his gang – played by Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr. and Jaden Smith – as they navigate their way through the burning Bronx during the birth of hip-hop in New York.

In addition to this, and perhaps most excitingly, the show also boasts the legendary rapper Nas as it’s executive producer. Not only has Nas served as executive producer however, but he has also written original music for the show and all the lyrics used throughout the series in poems and battle raps.

The 42-year-old rapper has been very busy of late; the premiere of the The Get Down this month coincides with the release of ‘The Land’ – a movie of which he was also executive producer – and he recently revealed that he also has a new album on the way: Esco featured on a track with DJ Khaled that was released last week titled Nas Album Done and in a recent interview with Complex, he confirmed that the project is indeed finished and in the marketing stage.

To add to the hype, The Get Down is supposedly also Netflix’s most expensive production to date and is rumoured to have cost around $US120 million to make.
