One of the largest concerns when it comes to cameras is the possibility of dropping it. All that hardware destroyed, all those memories gone in an instant. Casio has taken it upon itself to remedy this recently with the announcement of an overwhelmingly durable action camera, capable of withstanding ridiculously stressful conditions.

The Casio GZE-1 action camera has been tested to survive the impact of being dropped on rugged surfaces, wet for depths up to 50 metres, and frozen to temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. This is all possible thanks to the same technology found in and borrowed from Casio’s G-Shock sport watch series. And if their track record is anything to go by, then the camera’s well-being is in very good hands… even if yours aren’t.

Although the camera will not have a screen to preview what you’re shooting as you’re shooting it, or after the fact for that matter, it will be controllable by either the dedicated companion remote set to be sold alongside it, any Casio Pro Trek watch, or even a regular old smartphone.

There is a sacrifice to be made, however. Though the fine folks at Casio have achieved such a sturdy grade exterior, the GZE-1’s still images only capture 6.9MP, with the video reportedly being “full-HD”. That said, it will be able to record frame rates of up to 240fps. This means you’ll be able to adjust the frame rate of a clip after its been saved, either to slow it down or speed it up, without sacrificing much quality. Additionally, the stabilization system promises to shoot smooth and seamless camera movements, giving the end product a nice stable finish. An English translation of the full specs is available here.

A price has not yet been attached to this tough, little cam, but excitement is already in the air. Where will you take your Casio?
