Well, it looks like 20th Century Fox has another winner on their hands with Bad Times at the El Royale. Star studded cast: check. A field tested writer/director: check. A compelling story: big check. And I’d like to explain what it’s about, but have a geez at the trailer and then get back to me about filtering it down to a snappy single sentence.
From what can be discerned from the footage (and what I glazed over on the film’s Wikipedia page), the story follows seven strangers looking for a shot at redemption, only for some of them to literally get a shot… but of the lead variety. Not quite so redeeming.
The cast listing only serves to further intrigue. Jeff Bridges plays Father Daniel Flynn, “… a down-on-his-luck priest…”, with Cynthia Erivo, “… a down-on-her-luck singer…”. A pattern, interesting.
The two down-on-their-luck characters are joined by Jonn Hamm as a vacuum cleaner salesman, Dakota Johnson as a Southern girl/criminal, and Chris Hemsworth as a “… charismatic cult leader…”. Additionally, Russell Crowe and Nick Offerman are to appear in undisclosed roles. Star studded, indeed.
Behind the camera will stand Drew Goddard, the genius behind The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian’s screenplay, as well as Cloverfield’s screenplay. Air-tight.
The excitement is palpable, and personally, I smell major tier hype on the horizon.
