The sci-fi genre can often feel tired and trite these days. There’s only so many ways we can spell the demise of civilisation as we know it on screen before eyes start to glaze over. But somehow, the feature-length directorial debut of Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy – Reminiscence starring Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, and Thandiwe Newton – promises to be hella refreshing despite the presence of some familiar elements encountered in the likes of Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

Jackman takes centre stage as Nicolas “Nick” Bannister – a rugged and solitary “private investigator” living in a near-future Miami flooded by rising seas who specialises in a rather dangerous field: offering people the chance to relive and recover any memory they desire using military-approved technology.

“Nostalgia became a way of life… nothing is more addictive than the past,” Jackman’s Nick can be heard saying in the trailer above.

“We’re going on a journey through memory. All you have to do is follow my voice.”

Nick’s life is turned upside down when he encounters a mysterious young client named Mae (portrayed by Ferguson). What begins as a simple matter of lost and found soon becomes a passionate love affair. When Mae goes missing and another client’s memories implicates her in a series of violent crimes, Bannister is plunged into murky waters and tasked with uncovering the dark truth.

Joy, who also penned the screenplay, will be joined by Westworld co-creator and husband Jonathan Nolan (whose older brother is the high-concept king himself, Christopher Nolan). In addition to this latest thrilling collaboration as well as their ongoing success story over at HBO, Lisa Joy and the younger Nolan are also on track to adapt the Fallout video games into a live-action series for Amazon Studios.

Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan noted via press statement.

“Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

Reminiscence starring Hugh Jackman, Thandiwe Newtown, and Rebecca Ferguson will be released in theatres and streaming on August 19th – check out the trailer above.
