‘Last Night In Soho’ Is Already Being Called The Best Film Of 2021

Returning with his first feature-length release in four years, the hype surrounding director Edgar Wright’s new flick Last Night In Soho starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, and Thomasin McKenzie is already palpable. In fact, the trailer alone already has people clamouring to call it potentially – not to mention, pre-emptively – the “best film of 2021.”

Taking a hard left turn from the comedy-action genre, Wright – who most notably helmed the Cornetto Trilogy, i.e. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; as well as Scott Pilgrim vs The World starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead – seems rather intent on departing from his roots to explore new territory. Transitioning into pure action with Baby Driver and now psychological-horror via Last Night In Soho, based on what we know about the bloke as a filmmaker, this will be adventurous and inventive if nothing else.

The official synopsis of Last Night In Soho is as follows:

Eloise, a young woman with a passion for fashion design and a strange sixth sense, mysteriously finds herself transported back in time to 1966 London in the body of her idol – a singer named Sandy. While in Sandy’s body, she enters into a romantic relationship, but the city in the 1960s is not as it appears to be… the past and present seem to fall apart with shady and horrifying consequences.

The screenplay has been written by director Edgar Wright in collaboration with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the latter of whom famously co-wrote the screenplay for Sam Mendes’ massively acclaimed war film 1917.
