A little while back, we covered Netflix’s upcoming series, The Witcher, following the release of its first trailer. Since then, we’ve been blessed with a wealth of additional teaser content and one thing has become glaringly obvious: The Witcher will be the worthy successor to Game of Thrones that everyone has been waiting for.

This adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s best-selling novels and the hit video games will see Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia – the eponymous ‘witcher’. As depicted in both the final trailer and the featurette we’ve been so kindly offered, witchers such as Geralt operates on the fringes of mainstream society “universally hated by every species on The Continent.”

Endowed with extraordinary ability, this particular class of beings sits somewhere between grizzled mercenaries and guardians for all that is good. In the featurette below, Cavill himself describes Geralt as “quite good, but very capable of doing bad things.” Which, I think we can all agree, usually makes for some top-notch entertainment.

Since the conclusion of HBO’s Game of Thrones, networks and services alike have been scrambling to fulfil the demand for a major medieval-fantasy series (to the quality of the first seven-ish seasons, that is). Currently, over at Amazon, there is a production of the most expensive show in history with their Lord of the Rings adaptation

It’s safe to say that The Witcher will not only serve as Netflix’s star contender – but it may very well be the dominant streaming service‘s kingmaker.

The Witcher will be available to stream globally on December 20th of this year.
