Determined to become even more of a pop-cultural fixture beyond his involvement with Star Wars, X-Men, the titular role in Marvel’s Moon Knight, as well as Duke Leto Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s ambitious adaptation of Dune, Oscar Isaac will soon portray classic video game protagonist Solid Snake in Sony’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.

Based on the immensely successful + iconic series originally created by Hideo Kojima in 1987 and published via Konami, Sony’s Metal Gear Solid movie is currently set to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts with a screenplay accomplished by Derek Connolly – which marks their second collaboration after Kong: Skull Island.

Connolly has been experiencing some tremendous commercial success of late, credited with considerable involvement in blockbuster films ranging from the Jurassic World trilogy, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker… which, in a sense, also makes this his second collaboration with Oscar Isaac. The king of property adaptations – Avi Arad (too many notable titles to list so just click here) – is attached to produce.

For the uninitiated, Solid Snake is a highly-skilled spec-ops soldier in the elite FOXHOUND unit tasked with stealth and espionage missions; as generally the case when it comes to being a spec-ops soldier in a game, Solid Snake finds himself infiltrating nuclear weapons facilities and neutralising terrorist threats. A fun role, no doubt, and one that Isaac himself has previously expressed interest in while promoting Netflix’s Triple Frontier.

Similar to Sony’s other on-going video game film adaptation – Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg – the Metal Gear Solid movie has been in development for some time now. Hideo Kojima first hinted that something was in the works circa 2006. At this point in time, it’s still very much in the pre-production stage with no further details on additional casting, shooting schedules, nor a confirmed release date.
