It isn’t exactly the eighth season fans were hoping to receive but Showtime’s Ray Donovan is officially returning for a feature-length movie in early 2022.

Directed by showrunner David Hollander – who has co-written the screenplay and executive produced the entire project alongside series lead Liev Schreiber – the film will pick up right where season 7 was abruptly left off: with Jon Voight’s Mickey Donovan in the wind and his son, Schrieber’s titular Ray Donovan, on a mission to stop him before he can cause any more carnage. Similar to The Godfather Part II, the story will weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story thirty years prior.

Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight reunite with Eddie Marsan as Ray’s brother Terry, Dash Mihok as Ray’s other brother Bunchy, Pooch Hall as the Donovan’s half-brother Daryll, Kerris Dorsey as Ray’s daughter Bridget, Katherine Moennig as Lena, along with Kerry Condon as Molly Sullivan.

“When Ray Donovan went off our air after seven great seasons, we heard from so many of its loyal fans that they were not ready to say goodbye to Ray and the wonderfully dysfunctional Donovan clan,” says Gary Levine, Showtime Co-President of Entertainment.

“And so, for them, we are delighted that Liev Schreiber and David Hollander are creating a thrilling new chapter of this iconic series.”

“It seems your voices have been heard,” Liev Schrieber wrote on Instagram shortly after the initial show cancellation.

“Too soon to say how or when, but with a little luck and your continued support, there will be more Ray Donovan.”

Ray Donovan Movie

Ray Donovan originally aired from 2013 to 2020, racking up a grand total of 82 episodes across seven seasons. Throughout its multi-year run, the beloved Showtime crime drama earned multiple Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, Writers Guild, and Critics’ Choice nominations with the odd W every once in a while. In 2014, Jon Voight managed to win a Golden Globe for Best Performance By A Support Actor (Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television).

You’ll finally be able to catch the Ray Donovan movie on January 14th of 2022 – Australian streaming platform still TBA. Your best bet will probably be either Amazon Prime or Binge, given that’s where the main series currently resides.
