"My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces."

After the general disappointment of True Detective season two, it looks as though there may be an opportunity for redemption. Granted, we'll never re-create the magic of the McConaughey/Harrelson debut that was season one. But with a fresh perspective on what does and does not work, more time to develop a story, and the Academy Award Winning Mahershala Ali leading as state police detective Wayne Hays, the odds are definitely in the fans' favour.

In the footage shown, we see the series return back to its brooding, investigative roots, even jumping back and forth in the timeline. According to HBO, this instalment will tell the story of "... a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods." A familiar structure we know and love.

This might be getting a little ahead of ourselves, but we seriously think this upcoming season will have a viable shot at restoring True Detective to its initial glory.

The first episodes are set to air January 2019. Watch the full trailer above, and let us know what you think in the comments.
