I think it’s safe to say that most of us thought Rambo had run out of people to kill. Or at least we thought he’d run out of the angry, forehead-veined, trigger steam necessary to mow down waves upon waves of insurgents. Apparently not, as it is announced Sylvester Stallone will return as the titular John Rambo in a soon-to-be extremely real Rambo 5. And this time, old mate has his sights set on the Mexican cartels (I’m guessing it was between this and ISIS).
Having directed the last episode back in 2008, Sly is taking a bit less responsibility behind the camera for this one. Sliding into the director’s chair will be Expendables collaborator, Avi Lerner. So expect the action to be packed, grizzly, and over the top. Stallone is rumoured to be penning the screenplay, however, so this new instalment won’t exactly diverge that wildly from the original(s). Although I would literally kill for Rambo to have a philosophical tangent where he ponders Kantian morality… right before he skullcaps some fools with a massive fuck-off machine gun.
According to Deadline, the plot will be as follows:
“In the fifth episode of the franchise, when the daughter of one of his friends is kidnapped, Rambo, who has been working on a ranch, crosses the U.S.-Mexican border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexico’s most violent cartels.”
Let’s all just hope this revival of a, ahem, “well-explored”… franchise yields results closer to Creed, and less like what we’re all actually expecting.
On the subject of Creed, Stallone is currently working on the much anticipated follow-up to the critically and commercially acclaimed film. Creed II will mark the eighth instalment of the Rocky franchise.
