Die Hard screenwriter and creator of Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla spin-off series Jeb Stuart has been enlisted to pen the streaming giant’s other much-hyped upcoming release: a live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed.

The project has reportedly been in development since October 2020 as part of a larger content deal between Netflix and Ubisoft. After this one hits the streaming queues, fans can also look forward to an animated series and an anime series based on the bestselling international video game franchise. Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik have signed on to serve as executive producers.

At the current stage, extremely few details have been confirmed. We don’t even know which time period, geographical setting, or characters will be featured. All we know for sure is that it’ll depict the perennial conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the nefarious Templars throughout the history of man.

Given how Jeb Stuart is actively developing the Vikings spin-off, many suspect it could very well head in the direction of Ubisoft’s latest release, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Whether Netflix would be keen on a potential overlap is another matter entirely. If you were to ask anyone even remotely aware of the source material, however, chances are they’d nominate Ezio Auditore da Firenze as their #1 preference for adaptation, followed closely by Altaïr Ibn-LaʼAhad (both ancestors of Desmond Miles). Naturally, talent in addition to Stuart – on screen or otherwise – has not yet been announced, either.

Video game adaptations appear to be the next frontier in the world of streamed content. After the tremendous success experienced by The Witcher starring Henry Cavill, Netflix quickly geared up to adapt Resident Evil (live-action and anime), Diablo, Cyberpunk 2077, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, and Tomb Raider alongside Assassin’s Creed.

Beyond the crimson N, HBO is turning all the right heads with their run at The Last Of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, Amazon is tossing their hat in the ring with a Fallout series helmed by Westworld creators Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy, while fledgling platform Paramount+ is giving Halo the old college try.

Hopefully it fares a little better than the overly-ambitious 2017 live-action film directed by Justin Kurzel; starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling, and Michael K. Williams. We’ll update you as soon as we learn something new about Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed live-action series being written by Jeb Stuart.
