Rumours surrounding the iPhone 13 are already coming thick and fast, but the one detail that stands apart from the rest involves how much local storage Apple may be offering for the high-end models: an entire terabyte. That’s double the current maximum capacity of 512GB for the iPhone 12, which also comes in 128GB and 256GB.

According to a report by analysts from investment firm Wedbush (via Mashable), the dead giveaway was found within details regarding Apple’s supply chain. As per the report itself:

“From a spec perspective, we have increased confidence that iPhone 13 will have a one-terabyte storage option which is double from the highest Pro storage capacity today (512GB) and will also include a number of enhancements with LiDAR across all iPhone 13 models.”

The industry whispers have been given some additional credence by prolific Apple leaker Jon Prosser, who “doubled down” on the claim that Apple would deliver a terabyte local storage option in the iPhone 13‌ lineup prior to the latest reveal. Effectively, this means anyone who shoots imagery in ProRAW – 10 to 12 times larger than your everyday HEIF or JPEG files – or takes full advantage of 4K recording won’t have to pay for the extra iCloud storage.

Not only would this mark the first time Apple has offered such a hefty storage option for an iOS device outside of the iPad Pro models, it’ll also represent a stepping stone towards finally catching up to its Android competitors in this specific regard. Samsung, for example, has offered 1TB phones for a few years now since the Galaxy S10 series. Better late than never, as they say.

Other brand new features expected to be showcased by the iPhone 13 include the following:

  • always-on display w/ quicker 120Hz ProMotion Apple screen technology
  • stronger MagSafe magnetic connector
  • slimmer notch
  • better ultra-wide camera
  • sensor-shift optical image stabilisation (for all cameras – not just iPhone 12 Pro Max)
