The menswear pieces that say the least are often the loudest, which is certainly the case with the new Tom Ford x Mytheresa collection. The rapidly growing German retailer has hooked up with old mate Tom to reinterpret some of his bestselling styles with a more palatable, neutral approach, which especially sticks out when compared to the bright (and slightly lurid) Tom Ford Spring 2021 collection.

Clearly not even the most stylish bloke could pull off some of the pieces Tom Ford showed off in the brand’s divisive Spring ’21 collection. At least not in every situation. From neon pink knitwear to highlighter green floral trousers, Tom Ford went loud for this one, and opinions were split when at last year’s runway.

Mytheresa came on board to help tone the extroverted style down to something more grounded, taking a fresh and more versatile look at some of the pieces. Some Tom Ford classics have also received the same treatment, remixed to fit the modern approach of minimalism and the preference towards everyday wear.

Mytheresa launched their exclusive offering of Tom Ford styles this week, with a range that includes the brand’s iconic Western shirt in beige suede, the classic Tom Ford silk-cotton polo shirt in military green, and some white pleated trousers cut from a lightweight wool-silk blend based on the bubblegum pink version Tom Ford showed off on the runway earlier this year.

Some Tom Ford accessories get the same treatment as well, such as a brown leather braided belt, a khaki tote bag, and a pair of suede espadrilles. It all looks wildly different from the floral prints, iridescent greens, and pastel pinks that Tom Ford bravely debuted last year.

Talking to Vogue about the collection, Ford implied that his surprising approach was a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other stresses going on at the time.

“I think we want to smile. I know what’s going on in our world right now doesn’t make us want to smile… so that’s what I’ve done; hopeful clothes that make you smile.”

Although not every bloke would smile if they could only make their wardrobe work in very niche settings, significantly reducing the cost per wear. Neutral steps in and changes that, making the new 10-piece Tom Ford x Mytheresa collection much easier to swallow given the typical Tom Ford price tag. For these, that means a range of between US$470 (~AU$608) and US$7,100 (~AU$9,192).
