International auction house Sothebys has sold the most expensive bottle of wine ever in New York over the weekend. The bottle of 1945 burgundy Romanée Conti smashed records clocking in at a massive $781,000 AUD, that’s 17 times the upper estimate of $45,000 it was expected to go for.
The previous record was held by a six-litre bottle of Cheval-Blanc 1947 that sold in Geneva back in 2010 for a figure of $426,000 AUD.
The Romanée Conti was joined shortly after by other standouts from the same collection, including a second bottle of 1945 that went for $695,000 AUD and three magnums of 1937 that sold for $434,000 AUD each.
From the personal cellar of wine producer Robert Drouhin, the total collection of 100 bottles sold for $10.2 million AUD, nine of these clocking in at six-figure sums.
