The sauce that sent an already rabid fandom into hysterics a few years prior is back, as McDonald’s teases the return of the Rick & Morty Szechuan sauce with a pretty telltale image.
The sauce was originally released in the 90s as a promotion for Disney’s Mulan, but it has since found a second life in the cultural zeitgeist. Now henceforth known as the Rick & Morty sauce.
The image below was posted to the social media profiles of McDonald’s New Zealand, depicting a hand going through one of Rick Sanchez’s portals to dip a McNugget. Quite opportune timing, given the second half of Rick & Morty season four is also about to drop.
This marks the second revival of the limited edition sauce, the first of which occurred back in 2017. Many of you will recall all the reports detailing how socially maladjusted fans and manchildren would routinely abuse employees of McDonald’s when the sauce would invariably sell out. At one point, it reached a stage where police were required to intervene.
Of course, it didn’t take long before people began to take advantage of the scarcity; selling packets online for anywhere between US$5 to an entire jug for US$15,000.
The Szechuan sauce will be exclusively available to New Zealand locations from March 4th until stocks run out (with no current word of any other global locations).
As a general reminder, please don’t act a fucking fool for $2 dipping sauce. Have a bit of dignity and respect.
