Manchester United have just given us a glimpse at what their preseason will look like for next year and, for the first time since 1999, they have their sights set on Melbourne. The Red Devils will play two games at the sporting cathedral that is the Melbourne Cricket Ground: the first against Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and the second against our very own Melbourne Victory.
Man U is no stranger to Australia. In the past 25 years, we have seen Manchester United on our shores on three separate occasions: a match against the Socceroos in Melbourne back in 1999, a 2013 exhibition contest with the A-League All-Stars in Sydney, as well as the match against Leeds that took place in Perth three years ago.
Manchester United are struggling in the Premier League this season, currently 20 points behind leaders and arch-rivals Manchester City who are at sixth on the table. Melbourne Victory will also hold the sixth in the A-League, 15 points behind their own rivals Melbourne City FC who are the current leaders. They each need to turn things around and we might get a glimpse of that on Friday July 15, 2022.
Before coming to Melbourne, Manchester United are also set to face Liverpool in a match held in Bangkok on July 12. After being contained in Europe for the past two years, the club is excited to connect with its international fans again.
“It has been two years since the club has been able to travel on an international pre-season tour, so we can’t wait to get going and reconnect with our fans in Australasia,” Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer, Collette Roche said:
“Our matches in Melbourne will be a wonderful opportunity for international fans to see their favourite players up-close in an exciting schedule of games.”
