You thought avo on toast was ruining your weekly budget. If you're in the vicinity of these not-so-cheap eats, it's probably best to leave your bank cards at home in case you're one to get a bit tap-happy with PayPass.

The AUD$31,800 Taco

No, this isn’t a joke. This taco is really US$25,000 (AUD$31,800). How? The gold flake-infused tortilla is filled with langoustine, Kobe beef, beluga caviar, black truffle brie cheese and a sprinkling of more gold, obviously. The team at the Grand Velas Los Cabos resort suggest backing up the taco with a bottle of Ley .925 Pasión Azteca Ultra Premium Añejo, just an additional $150,000. I mean, why not?

The AUD$2550 Pizza

A slight upgrade from your usual Dominoes order. Industry Kitchen in NYC has a pizza on the menu for a cool US$2,000 (AUD$2550). That’s US$250 for a slice so roundabout US$50 for a mouthful. Insane figures. You’ve got white stilton cheese from England, Ossetra caviar from the Caspian Sea, truffles and foie gras from France and flakes of gold leaf from Ecuador. It’s rich, just like the people ordering it.

The AUD$7350 Watermelon

Watermelons are 92% water so it’s hard to believe these things can rack up in price. But the black Densuke watermelon is sweeter, harder and crisper than your standard supermarket purchase and thus far from ordinary. The luxury fruit is only grown on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido - a harvest typically produces a few dozen so it’s fair to say they’re rare. Back in 2008, a 7.7kg watermelon was sold at an auction for JPY ¥650000 (AUD$7350) to become the most expensive watermelon in the world.

The AUD$420,000 Truffle

Truffles are expensive but the Italian white alba truffle takes this to a new level. These rare fungi are found in the mountains of Northern Italy and are notoriously difficult to cultivate. Records were reached in 2007 when casino owner Stanley Ho,bought his wife a single white truffle weighing in at 1.51kg for HK$2.57m (AUD$420,000). Bargain.

The AUD$6350 Burger

A big mac - a couple of beef patties, some iceberg lettuce, the usual cheese-onion-pickle combo and a special sauce = AUD$4.30. The FleurBurger 5000 - a wagyu beef and foie gras patty topped with some truffle sauce =AUD$6350. That’s it. No gold leaf, no caviar…just a little more upmarket than McDonald's. It’s the bottle of Bordeaux paired with the burger which gives it that hefty price tag. A 1995 Chateau Petrus, typically sells for AUD$6,200. Two bottles it is then.
