- A24 might have another banger on its hands with Josh Safdieโs high-stakes ping pong drama Marty Supreme (which now has a teaser trailer).
- Starring Academy Award nominee Timothee Chalamet and winner Gwyneth Paltrow, in line with the Safdie brothersโ MO, the cast also features recognisable non-actors.
- Marty Supreme release date: December 25th, 2025 (International).
From one half of the genius brothers behind Good Time and Uncut Gems comes a gripping A24 drama about ping pong, of all sports, starring Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa Aโzion, Kevin OโLeary of Shark Tank fame, as well as hip-hop multihyphenate Tyler, The Creator (real name: Tyler Okonma).
True to the filmmaking brothersโ reputation, from the casting of non-actors to the subject matter, director Josh Safdie has embraced the unexpected at every possible turn for a pairing that theoretically should not work. And yet somehowโฆ it does. As youโll see for yourself in the teaser trailer for Marty Supreme above, not since Balls of Fury has the sport been spun to such epic cinematic heights.
The story follows Chalametโs titular Marty Mauser, who is apparently loosely based on real-life able tennis icon Marty Reisman. The fictional Marty sets out to make a name for himself in both an arena where there isnโt much mainstream respect for his paddled art, and during a period of history where he doesnโt have a platform to champion his niche mastery. Ultimately, itโs about honouring your own truth and following oneโs own dreamโฆ and โa lot of sex,โ according to Paltrow.
โI know itโs hard to believe, but Iโm telling you, this game, it fills stadiums overseas,โ Chalamet can be heard saying in the Marty Supreme trailer.

โAnd itโs only a matter of time before Iโm staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.โ
In addition to helming the production, Josh Safdie has reunited with Good Times and Uncut Gems co-writer and co-editor, Ronald Bronstein. The cinematography, on the other hand, has been accomplished by the legendary Darius Khondji (Seven, The Beach, Funny Games, Amour, Mickey 17), who also collaborated with the Safdies on Uncut Gems.
Incidentally, Benny Safdieโs own A24 sports drama is scheduled for release later this year โ his title The Smashing Machine and centred on the real-life mixed martial arts pioneer Mark Kerr, who Dwayne โThe Rockโ Johnson has transformed to portray (almost beyond recognition).
Aside from Emily Blunt as Kerrโs longtime partner Dawn Staples, this biopic similarly makes use of eyebrow-raising non-actors like former Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader as inaugural UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman, the one and only Bas Rutten as himself, plus undisputed heavyweight boxing great Oleksandr Usyk as Igor Vovchanchyn.
Are we about to find out if each brother is equal in movie magic talent, or will we discover one of them had the juice all along while the other was essentially carried a la the Coen brothers?
Marty Supreme starring Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow hits cinemas internationally from December 25th, 2025 (Christmas Day) โ keep an eye out here for the Australian release date and check out the first teaser trailer above.
