  • In his first directorial effort since The Whale, Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan) has delivered Caught Stealing.
  • Featuring an ensemble cast led by Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz, this black comedy follows a former baseball player who gets thrown into New York’s criminal underworld.
  • Caught Stealing release date (Australia): August 28th, 2025.

Darren Aronofsky has chosen to follow up his critically acclaimed screen version of The Whale with another adaptation: this time of the Charlie Huston novel Caught Stealing. And at face value, we detect hints of vintage Guy Ritchie in what promises to be a fun cinematic affair.

The story follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a high school baseball phenom who can no longer play. But life isn’t so bad. As per the synopsis, it’s the 90s. He’s got a great girl name Yvonne (Zoe Kravitz). He works a steady bartender gig at a charming New York dive. And his favourite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.

Hank’s comfortable world, however, gets thrown into a tailspin when his punk-rock neighbour Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to “take care of his cat for a few days.” Our regular joe suddenly finds himself in the crosshairs of several threatening gangsters.

“They all want a piece of him. The problem is, he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’s got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out…”

Butler, Kravitz, and Smith are joined by Regina King as Roman, Liev Schreiber as Lipa, Vincent D’Onofrio as Shmully, Griffin Dunne as Paul, Benito A Martínez Ocasio (AKA Bad Bunny) as Colorado, Warfare star D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Dale, as well as the almost obligatory companion for a New York story, rapper-slash-chef Action Bronson. Judging by some of those actors and their past roles, you can probably guess who the movie gangsters are.

Huston has adapted his own novel into a screenplay with cinematography accomplished by serial Darren Aronofsky collaborator Matthew Libatique (Pi, Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain, Black Swan; as well as Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Maestro).

In terms of a release date, Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz hits Australia on August 28th, 2025 – check out the trailer above.
