Weโ€™re Getting A New Star Wars Film About The First Ever Jedi

โ€” 12 April 2023

Director James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari, Logan) might have Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny set to release in only a couple of months, but that hasnโ€™t stopped him from looking ahead to whatโ€™s next. Mangold recently revealed that heโ€™s begun working on a new Star Wars film about the very first jedi, as well as another film centered on the DC comics character Swamp Thing.

At this yearโ€™s Star Wars Celebration held in London, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Mangoldโ€™s entry in the Star Wars cannon would explore โ€œthe first Jedi to wield the forceโ€.

โ€œIt takes place 25,000 years before Episode IV, and itโ€™s about the discovery of the Force,โ€ says Mangold.

โ€œI told Kathy [Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm] I wanted to make a kind of Bible movie, a kind of Ten Commandments of Star Wars โ€“ kind of a Cecil B DeMille film about the arrival of the Force, and thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been pecking away at between press events. Thatโ€™s the idea.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a movie that both connects to the worlds we know, but is also far enough away from it that I think thereโ€™s a lot of opportunities to tell a story freely, alsoโ€ฆand not be so incredibly tied in by the knots and different story strands that are already in place.โ€

We also found out that we were getting two other Star Wars films, on top of James Mangoldโ€™s untitled project. One of these films is set to come from The Mandalorian co-creator Dave Filoni and centers on an โ€œescalating war between the Imperial remnant and the New Republicโ€ set between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The other Star Wars film will be helmed by Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will be set 15 years after The Rise Of Skywalker. This will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey amidst what has been described as a โ€œNew Jedi Orderโ€. However, any further details are hard to come by for the project. Rest assured, weโ€™ll keep you posted once we know more about the various new Star Wars movies.
