To nobody’s surprise, pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 has sold out at a breakneck pace with Sony having to issue an official apology for the site crashes, insufficient stock, and irate gamers. As much as we hate the “u” word this year, the sales figures are well and truly unprecedented, and in comparison to the PlayStation 4 launch – it was nothing short of impressive.

As reported by Reuters, according to the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment – Jim Ryan – the PlayStation 5 pre-sold more units in the first 12 hours than its predecessor did within the first 12 weeks of being commercially available. Considering the PlayStation 4 has managed to sell over 100 million units to date, this promises to be a sizeable win.

“The demand as expressed by the level of pre-order has been very, very considerable,” says Ryan.

“The initial concerns about the impact on the 2021/2022 roster were really legitimate but are probably slightly assuaged now… It may well be that not everybody who wants to buy a PS5 on launch day will be able to find one.”

Ryan has, however, reassured the public that Sony is “working as hard as [they] can” to ensure there’ll be enough to go around for all the rabid masses come Christmas. Which I believe is just code for, “Get in quick… we ain’t promisin’ shit.”

The PlayStation 5 will be available in Australia from November 12th – 749.95 for the flagship version and $599 for the digital-only discless version.
