- Carlton & United Breweriesโ Chief Beer Tester, Tina Panoutsos, has officially signalled last call for her storied career after more than three decades sampling liquid gold.
- The good news for every other beer-loving individual in the country? You now have a chance to become Panoutsosโ replacement.
- But you best believe the competition (and skillset demand) will be mighty stiff for the top job.
If youโre weighing up that long overdue career change, you may be interested to learn that Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) is currently on the hunt for a new chief beer taster.
The role at the Asahi-owned company is becoming available as Tina Panoutsos, who dutifully worked the coveted gig for over 30 years, formally announces her intentions to step down, and looks to train up her successor.
โI love it, thatโs why Iโve been here for over three decades,โ she said.
The selection process will, of course, involve an extensive assessment of potential candidatesโ ability to analyse every single aspect of a beer โ from colour and clarity to foam and mouthfeel (not just taste alone, contrary to the title).

According to 9News, Tina Panoutsos logs approximately 30 beer tastings a day in the role sheโs leaving behind (heavy lies the crown, etc.), analysing and scoring each sample out of nine based on a specific criteria, and flagging any possible abnormalities.
โDefinitely no coffee before tasting, and if so, wash your mouth out. Otherwise, no spicy food,โ she suggested to hopeful applicants.
Back in early 2024, a Sunshine Coast man was appointed chief beer tasting officer for Heads of Noosa Brewery, which reportedly paid a salary of $1,000 for four hours of work per year. One can only imagine how youโd be compensated for a behemoth of an operation such as the Melbourne-based CUB.
