As yet another brilliant summer slowly draws to a close and catch ups with friends over a drink move from the backyard into the living room by the fire, we thought it was high time to introduce you to our new favourite winter cocktail, our take on the Old Fashioned, the Old Rum Boss.
The Old Fashioned is, as one of the oldest cocktails going around, aptly named. But while most make it with whiskey or bourbon, we’ve recently been quite taken with substituting whiskey for rum, particularly Substation No. 41 Rum.
While known in the past as a drink for sickly old man, rum is making a very well deserved comeback amongst the drinking cognoscenti as a dearth of quality product hits the shelves, Substation No. 41 being one of the best we’ve tasted. Co- Created by the guys at the world renowned Queensland rum bar Substation No. 41, their offering was specifically crafted for an Australian palette, and having been able to enjoy a couple of bottles over the last few months, we have to say they’ve definitely got it right. It’s a little sweeter than your run of the mill rum, with subtle vanilla and citrus notes, so it works perfectly as the main ingredient of our Old Rum Boss.
While some subscribe to the ‘more is more’ Old Fashioned school of thought turning it into an overly sugary fruit salad, we like to keep ours simple and beautifully easy to make.
