As much as Muhammad Ali knew how to deal with challenge and suffering, the world champion boxer also knew how to enjoy the finer things in life, which is clear to see in his lavish and luxurious Fremont Place home. Located close to the uber affluent areas of Hollywood and Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, Fremont Place is situated in the gated community of Hancock Park where Ali lived with his third wife, in a home that has arrived on the market for just shy of US$17 million (AU$25 million).

The residence at 55 Fremont Place is an Italian Renaissance–inspired home constructed back in 1915 for the oil baron Martin Henry Mosier, who employed the talents of architect John C. Austin (the man who designed the LA City Hall, Griffith Observatory and the Shrine Auditorium). The brief Mosier gave to Austin specified the home to have seven bedrooms and four bathrooms, complete with a green glazed tile roof, which Austin executed with appropriate design flair.

Located on an extremely desirable corner block in Hancock Park, it was in 1979 that Muhammad Ali purchased the Fremont Place home with his wife Veronica Porché Ali, when he was already a famous athlete around the world and in the last years of his boxing career. During the time Ali owned the home, it saw more than its fair share of famous guests, including Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Michael Jackson and beyond, before Ali eventually sold the home in 1986.

As is true with a number of the palatial homes in Hancock Park, there’s an undeniable sense of old-world grandeur about the property at 55 Fremont Place, which stands two stories tall and features a large pool in its garden. Among the points of spectacular craftsmanship that can be found in the home, there’s an enormous set of stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany, who was a renown designer and the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & Co.

Properties within Hancock Park have become increasingly popular of late, with a fresh generation of Hollywood personalities calling the community home including Mindy Kaling (The Office, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Ozzy Osbourne. While the home is currently listed for significantly more than the US$2.5 million (AU$6.2 million inflation adjusted) its current owners paid for the property back in 2001, real estate agent Garry Gold isn’t likely to have any issues finding a new owner for 55 Fremont Place, especially with provenance as special as Muhammad Ali.
