  • According to new data on new cars sold in Australia for 2025, the Land Rover Defender was the best-selling model within the broader luxury segment.
  • Porsche had a large year on year decline (-27%) off the back of slow electric Macan sales.
  • Rounding out the top five most popular luxury cars were the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport, Lexus GX, and BMW X7.

Last week, we reported the very best-selling cars in Australia for 2025, with the Ford Ranger claiming top spot for the third year in a row. It was a year that saw a very slight dip in total sales numbers, with 1,209,808 new vehicles being sold compared to a record-setting year in 2024, when a total of 1,220,607 new cars were sold.

It was a resilient year for the market overall, but amid the ups and downs of makers and models across the board, some fared better than others, especially in the luxury segments. Specifically, the Land Rover Defender has been revealed as the best-selling luxury car of 2025, with the British-founded automaker recording an impressive total of 3,854 units sold, or a 20.1% increase compared to 2024.

Rounding out the top three within the luxury segment were the BMW X5, which sold 3,673 units in a 16.3% jump year-on-year, and the Range Rover Sport, which sold 2,306 units in a 4.5% increase compared to last year. It wasn’t all good news for those playing in the pricier segments, however.

The most eye-catching decline was that of Porsche, which sold 5,133 units in 2025 compared to 7,029 in 2024, a drop of 27% year-on-year. This was significantly due to the discontinuation of the petrol-powered Macan (replaced by an all-electric version), selling a total of 2,194 vehicles (-34.0%), and to a lesser extent, the electric Taycan, which dropped by 37.6% with only 176 units sold.

Oliver Blume, the CEO of both Volkswagen Group and Porsche, admitted to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that discontinuing the petrol Macan was a mistake, but that given the data he and his team had in front of them, they’d make the same decision again.

“We were wrong about the Macan,” Blume explained. “Based on the data available at the time and our assessment of our markets, we would make the same decision again [to go electric-only]. Today, the situation is different. We have responded and are adding combustion engines and hybrids.”

“Our strategy was to offer combustion engines, hybrids, and electric sports cars in each of our three segments – but not for every product.”
