  • BMW has announced the Concept Speedtop, a shooting brake masterpiece based on the fan-favourite M8.
  • Despite its performance-focused spec sheet, it remains impressively practical.
  • The BMW Concept Speedtop will cost approximately โ‚ฌ500,000 (AU$880,000) and be limited to just 70 examples.

Everyone loves a BMW Touringโ€ฆ but what about a Speedtop? Thatโ€™s precisely what weโ€™ve got here with an M8-derived, limited-run special that recently debuted at Villa dโ€™Esteโ€™s Concours dโ€™Elegance.

This V8 shooting brake channels both heritage coachbuilding and modern manufacturing, all wrapped in a sexy silhouette thatโ€™s fresh, unforgettable, and quite frankly, the stuff of dreams.

Drawing on the German marqueโ€™s recent special editions, such as the 2015 3.0 CSL tribute and last yearโ€™s Skytop, the Speedtop reinvents the idea of a shooting brake with its shark-like prow and barely-there slimline headlights. The illuminated kidney grille remains pared back compared to BMWโ€™s usual flamboyance, while a central bonnet โ€œsplineโ€ sweeps into the roof, guiding the eye along the flowing carbon-composite body.

The two-tone finish of the flowing carbon-composite body โ€“ โ€œSunstone Maroonโ€ shifting to โ€œSundown Silverโ€ โ€“ is extraordinarily lavish, while the turbine-style alloy wheels and muscular rear end haunches further underline BMWโ€™s coachbuilder ambitions. Lift the boot, and youโ€™ll find bespoke Schedoni luggage that fits neatly into the clever split-level compartment, with an upper lid swathed in leather, the lower bay subtly lit for when you arrive at your destination.

โ€œA true BMW exudes dynamism and elegance even when itโ€™s standing still. And thatโ€™s also the case with our new concept car,โ€ said Head of BMW Group Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, in a statement.

โ€œThe BMW Concept Speedtop is characterised first of all by its profile. It is very unique in the automotive industry. In this way, we have created an exclamation mark for our entire lineup of vehicles, especially for the Touring models.โ€

Underneath this bespoke bodywork lies the familiar S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, which delivers a rock-solid 390kW of grunt. Inside, the link to the 8 Series is clear; though the Speedtop pushes BMWโ€™s bespoke programme to the limit with brown โ€œSundown Maroonโ€ leather enveloping the dashboard, door tops plus centre console, and is contrasted sharply by โ€œMoonstone Whiteโ€ seats.

With only 70 units available, expect collectors to flock. But if youโ€™re keen on adding one to your garage, youโ€™ll need suitably deep pockets given the anticipated price tag of around โ‚ฌ500,000 (AU$880,000).
