- Chery is launching a groundbreaking new ute in Australia in late 2026, set to become the world’s first plug-in hybrid diesel model.
- Designed with Aussie conditions in mind, it combines serious towing and payload capabilities with improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
- To celebrate the launch, Chery has opened a nationwide competition inviting Australians to name the ute, with the grand prize being the very first production model to arrive on local soil.
There are few things that better represent the quintessential, modern Australian experience than long dusty road trips through breathtaking Outback scenery and a dependable ute to drive.
This enduring love affair with the mighty off-roader has seen more new utes sold in 2025 than ever before – nearly a quarter of a million – representing a 2.8% increase YoY and around 20% of total new cars sales.
For many Australians, the ute sits at the centre of both work and lifestyle; a category that’s stacked with tough and practical vehicles, purpose-built to clock up kilometres on job sites during the week before hauling camping gear up the coast or deep inland come Friday afternoon. It’s a car that’s expected to do it all without compromise.
Now, Chinese automaker Chery is looking to carve out its own place in this fiercely competitive segment, unveiling a new ute concept that aims to shake up expectations in a big way… and its latest promotion is handing you the keys to the first generation to hit Aussie roads.

Set to arrive in Australia in Q4 2026, the model is tipped to become the world’s first plug-in hybrid diesel ute, giving Australian drivers more choice for hybrid power, improving efficiency and lowering emissions, in a market that’s traditionally leaned heavily on conventional diesel powertrains.
Though, according to the brand, the new ute has been designed with Australian conditions front of mind, entering the marketing with more torque, better towing capacity, and that all-important range. Which, in a country where a 5-10 hour round trip isn’t out of the question, remains one of the biggest concerns for drivers today.
The new Chery ute’s spec sheets suggests this 2026 newcomer will be able to handle its own against an already stacked slate of new models.
Powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, the Chinese brand has said the new ute is 10% more fuel efficient than its average diesel counterparts. Couple that with 1000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity, it looks to be every bit the workhorse Australians expect.

But perhaps the most interesting part of this launch isn’t just the tech – it’s what Chery is asking Australians to do next. Suggest the name for this upcoming Australian release. The winner will get their hands on the very first example to land on Australian soil.
To enter you just have to submit your name idea, along with a short explanation why they think it’s the right fit. Just don’t be surprised when someone comes out with the ever-original ‘Car-y McCarface’.
The competition is open now, and will run until Thursday, March 26 2026 when voting will close at 11.50 PM AEST. A shortlist will then be put to final vote, and the winning name will be announced. Good luck.
