- At the recent 2025 Munich Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius revealed the G-Class will return as a soft-top convertible.
- This is the first time since 2014 that Mercedes-Benz has officially offered the G-Class in the summer-ready format.
- While Mercedes-Benz has yet to confirm when or where the car will be available, it’s expected to be available in Australia.
Mercedes-Benz has created countless iconic cars over the years, but arguably the most famous to ever wear the three-pointed star will once again be available as a convertible. That’s right, we’re getting a Mercedes-Benz G-Class Convertible.
Revealed at the 2025 Munich Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius used his keynote address to announce the latest addition to the G-Class family. Open-air G-Wagens have, of course, been a part of the off-roader’s DNA for decades, though this is the first time we’re getting a proper production convertible in over a decade.
When the civilian G launched back in 1979, a three-door short-wheelbase soft-top was one of five styles on offer, with drop-tops continuing to appear over the years. The line culminated in the G500 ‘Final Edition’ cabriolet circa 2014, before the coachbuilt Maybach G650 Landaulet (limited to 99 units) landed in 2017 – pairing an extended-chassis five-door with the rear section of the short-wheelbase convertible and a powered fabric roof.

Now, the soft-top cruiser is making a return, with Mercedes-Benz offering just a teaser of what to expect with a darkened silhouette of the upcoming G-Class.
“It’s become a tradition for us to talk about new G-Classes [at this show],” said Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius in his announcement. “Yes, we’re going to extend our G-Class family again.”
“We’re staying true to the original size with another new model to grow our top-end portfolio. Think the same icon, just a little bit more breezy. Yep, the top goes down. The G-Class convertible is coming back.”
“Here’s the first spy shot of our future G-Class family, and I promise it’s going to be worth the wait.”
Sun on your shoulders, spare on the back, ladder-frame stance intact. The G-Wagen summer is back.
