Songbird and magnetic personality โ John Mayer โ has long been a fan of the Land Rover Defender, which is why he was asked to take centre stage for a bit of sponsored content. And what I will say is this: as far brand shoutouts go, Land Rover couldnโt possibly have asked for a better โ or more organic โ endorsement.
In true John Mayer fashion, his attempt to reconnect with nature is irreverent, hilarious, authentic, and ends with a song. โA Simple Songโ, to be exact โ which he composed for himself on his birthday back in 2014 (fair warning, itโs likely to stir sentimental feelings). This may be sponsored content, sure, but if every ad spot were like this, itโs safe to assume weโd all part with our money a hell of a lot easier.
โI donโt think you can come out here and get any other message from yourself than, โYouโre alrightโฆ Youโre okay.โ,โ says the musician.
โThereโs always this moment when youโre about to leave and go out into nature where you feel a little crazy for doing it. Then if you keep going, you start laughing, you start turning on the music, and you become, like โ joyous.โ
Given what youโre about to experience and Talking Watches with Hodinkee, I think itโs high time a Netflix or an Amazon give old Johnny Boy his very own documentary series where he aimlessly roams the world. Something in the space of Anthony Bourdain or, indeed, Jeff Goldblum.
Enough talk, watch John Mayer be John Mayer on behalf of Land Rover in the video above.
