A Brief History Of The ‘Drake Curse’ Ahead Of The 2019 NBA Finals

— Updated on 10 August 2022

It’s time to get down to business in the NBA, with the Finals kicking off tomorrow morning, 11:00 am (AEST), as the Toronto Raptors take on the Golden State Warriors.

But while the Raptors are looking to capture their first ever NBA ring, there’s one big Drake-sized problem standing in their way – Drake.

Usually, we don’t have enough good things to say about the King from the 6, and his car collection, but when it comes to sports, put simply he’s a bad luck charm. Welcome to the Drake Curse.

The ‘Drake Curse’ essentially involves Drizzy donning a team’s jersey (or simply kicking it with an athlete), only for that team/individual to suffer a humiliating loss shortly after.

The Kentucky Wildcats

Sport: College Basketball

The Kentucky Wildcats were the most successful NCAA basketball team OF ALL TIME until 2012, which is also the year Drake started rocking up to their games. Since then, the Wildcats have failed to win a national championship title. Seven years, zero wins. Must be God’s Plan.

Manchester City

Sport: Football

Not even the might and power of Abu Dhabi oil money can derail the Drake curse. Manchester City were flying high in the UEFA Champions League this year until star striker Sergio Aguero blew it by snapping a pic with Drake. Days later, the sheikh-owned football club crashed out of the competition to Tottenham Hotspurs. Just Drake tings.

So feared is the curse that other football teams have actively warned their players not to be spotted with Drizzy. See below from AS ROMA.

Conor McGregor

Sport: MMA/UFC

Talk about a meeting of two proper lords. Earlier this year Conor McGregor hooked up with your boy, Champagne Papi, in what was undeniably a clash of egos for the ages. Drake and the Notorious became fast friends, and in the lead up to Conor’s clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov, Drake was all up in the fighter’s camp, often draped in an Irish flag. What happened next? Conor got his face rearranged and the curse continues.

Qantas Wallabies

Sport: Rugby Union

Turns out even our very own rugger heroes have been struck down by Drake’s disastrous backing. During his 2015 tour of Australia, Drake rocked their green and gold Wallabies drip during a few of his sets. And since then…well the less said about the Wallabies, the better.

Now with the NBA Finals set to tip off, and Drake being the Raptors biggest fan, the pressure is on. Luckily for Raptors fans, Drake has cottoned on to the curse and is starting to reverse his own luck.

In the Raptors recent game 7 battle with the Philadelphia 76ers, Drake was spotted rocking 76ers gear. Raptors won the game and the series. Pure sassy from the former Degrassi.

And to think you ever doubted Drizzy? Let the Finals begin.
