The biggest sporting event on the planet is almost here, and for once, the time zones are actually on our side. The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 12 (AEST), and for Australian football fans, it’s shaping up to be the most accessible World Cup in years, with every single match broadcast live and free right here at home.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When and Where Is the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

The tournament opener is Mexico vs. South Africa, which kicks off at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Friday, June 12 (AEST), with a 5 AM start. From there, the action spreads across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico (the first World Cup ever staged across three nations simultaneously).

The group stage runs through to June 27 (AEST), the knockout rounds follow through July, and the final is set for Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, making it one of the most convenient finals in recent memory for Australian viewers.

What’s Special About This World Cup?

This is the biggest World Cup ever staged, with 48 teams competing across 104 total matches, which is a solid step-up from the 32 teams and 64 games in 2022.

The expanded format means a new Round of 32 has been added to the knockout stage, and eight third-placed group-stage teams now advance alongside the top two from each group.

A few in-game rule changes are also worth knowing about. There’ll be mandatory three-minute hydration breaks midway through each half (sponsored by Powerade and resulting in 208 new advertising slots), only team captains can approach the referee to contest decisions, and players have just five seconds to restart play on dead balls.

It sounds minor, but it should keep games moving at a pace that suits the late-night or early-morning crowd watching from home.

What Time Does the 2026 World Cup Start in Australia?

Given the soccer tournament spans three countries at varying time zones, kick-off times across the group stage range from roughly midnight through to 2 AM, 5 AM, 8 AM, and 2 PM AEST. The North American hosting means the bulk of the games land in the early morning, which is far kinder to Australian fans than the 2022 Qatar tournament’s schedule.

For the Socceroos specifically, these are the dates to lock in to watch Australia’s three group-stage fixtures:

  • Sunday, June 14: Australia v Tรผrkiye, 2 PM AEST
  • Saturday, June 20: USA v Australia, 5 AM AEST
  • Friday June 26: Paraguay v Australia, 12 PM AEST

The June 14 match against Tรผrkiye is the standout for casual fans, landing on a Saturday afternoon kick-off that probably means you’ll have beer in hand and no alarm clock required. The USA game is a 5 AM start, but given the atmosphere that’s already building, it’s worth the early rise.

Where can you stream the 2026 World Cup?

In the best news of all, SBS has secured the exclusive broadcast rights for all 104 matches, live and free, across SBS, SBS VICELAND, and SBS On Demand. You don’t need to pay for any subscriptions, and you definitely don’t need Kayo. All you do just need is the SBS On Demand app, a free account, and a half-decent internet connection.

Full match replays, 30-minute mini-matches, extended highlights, and three-minute recaps will all be available on SBS On Demand after every game, cementing it as arguably the best set-up Australian football fans have ever had for a World Cup.

To get set up before June 12, SBS recommends:

  • Update your SBS On Demand app (iOS / Android) to the latest version
  • Log in to your SBS On Demand account across all your devices (smart TV, phone, tablet, laptop, etc)
  • Enable push notifications for match alerts and key updates
  • Sign up for the SBS Sport newsletter for previews and viewing info delivered to your inbox

The Stars to Watch

Argentina captain Lionel Messi turns 39 during the tournament and is poised to become the first man to play in six World Cups, the last of which, in 2022, he won the Golden Ball. At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player to have scored at five World Cups and is chasing the one trophy that’s eluded him his entire career.

Both are ageing, but both are still capable of extraordinary moments, and this is almost certainly the last time either man graces the biggest stage of them all.

Beyond the farewell tour, Kylian Mbappรฉ already has 12 World Cup goals (tied sixth all-time with Pelรฉ) and needs five more to break the record. Lamine Yamal, who’s just 18 years old, was Ballon d’Or runner-up last year. Harry Kane has scored over 50 goals for Bayern Munich this season alone. Erling Haaland scored 16 goals in eight qualifying games and has taken Norway to a World Cup for the first time since 1998.

Keep an eye, too, on Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ (France’s reigning Ballon d’Or winner), Raphinha (Brazil), Vinรญcius Jรบnior (Brazil), and Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), who could all be decisive for their nations.
