It’s taken nearly four years, but Melbourne City FC have finally unveiled a predominantly sky blue home shirt for the upcoming A-League season, set to kick-off in early October. Dubbed “City Blue,” the new kit was launched last night at North Melbourne’s heritage-listed Meat Market, with club members and media treated to a first glimpse of the Nike built shirt modelled by stars including Bruno Fornaroli, Luke Brattan, Tim Cahill, and latest signing Stefan Mauk.
Sure to upset reigning A-League champions Sydney FC, who formally complained to the FFA in 2014 about City’s potential to muscle in on their sky blue turf, the kit delivers a closer, fast feeling performance fit by club apparel partner Nike based on the latest iteration of their famous one-for-all template. The shirt itself features a clean finished neckline and side tape highlights which provide agility and increased flexibility during exercise, with the kit enhanced by a mesh fabric which increases airflow for player comfort.
Catching up with midfielder Luke Brattan at the event, fresh off the birth of his first child earlier this offseason, we got insight into the players thoughts on the new kit that finally brings the Bundoora-based club’s uniforms inline with the rest of City Football Group’s handful of global teams – “It’s original, simple, extremely nice; especially the new home shirt. It looks good, feels good, I like it a lot.”
The away shirt again features a nod to City’s Melbourne Heart roots, with red and white vertical stripes blending with all-red sleeves, shorts and socks.
