  • Panerai’s latest Submersible Marina Militare novelties celebrate the watchmaker’s long-standing relationship with the Italian Navy.
  • The launch includes the Submersible Marina Militare PAM01697 and Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech PAM01698.
  • Both watches are now available from Panerai boutiques: $19,000 for the PAM01697 and $29,700 for the PAM01698.

Panerai’s story has always been tied to the sea. Over a century ago, the Florentine-founded watchmaker began crafting hard-wearing, precision instruments for the Italian Navy. The new Submersible Marina Militare novelties continue this very legacy with watches designed to handle just about anything.

These two new references aren’t just linked to Italy’s naval forces, but with the Italian Navy’s aviation branch: Aviazione Navale. The Submersible Marina Militare PAM01697 and Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech PAM01698 arrive in a fusion of professional-grade robustness and modern watchmaking, reinforcing Panerai’s reputation for timepieces that bridge the chasm between military and civilian life.

The PAM01697 comes in brushed stainless steel with a matte green ceramic bezel, while the PAM01698 is crafted entirely from Carbotech. Each one’s case measures 44mm in diameter. This proprietary carbon composite is lighter than titanium, more resistant than ceramic, and gives each case a unique pattern on its surface.

The dials are a nod to Aviazione Navale flight gear, presented in green-grained matte with a subtle gradient effect. Other details include a radar-inspired small seconds, oversized indexes filled with grey Super-LumiNova, and the Marina Militare signature at six o’clock.

“The new Submersible Marina Militare timepieces are symbols of our enduring partnership with the Italian Navy, a relationship that began in the 1910s and remains a cornerstone of our DNA,” stated Alessandro Ficarelli, Chief Marketing &Product Officer of Panerai. “Designed as true tool watches, these timepieces honour our legacy of engineering precision instruments for survival and adventure.”

Water resistant to 300 metres and tested beyond specification (around +25%), the watches are delivered on green canvas straps with military-style stitching, alongside a second black rubber option. The casebacks, on the other hand, are engraved with Aviazione Navale wings – a first for Panerai – cementing the aviation-specific connection.

Both timepieces are powered by the P.900 calibre, an impressively slim automatic movement offering a three-day power reserve (72 hours), stop-seconds function, as well as a balance wheel beating at 28,800vph. Rugged, technical, and delivering an unapologetic presence on the wrist, it’s like we said in the headline: these Submersibles prove Panerai’s military heritage are as relevant as ever.
