Before paying for a domestic flight, there’s one search worth making. Through Velocity Frequent Flyer, the airline loyalty program of Virgin Australia, members can book available domestic Economy Reward Seats from 5,900 Velocity Points one way, plus taxes, fees and carrier charges. The trick is looking specifically for Reward Seats, then comparing them with paid flights and Points + Pay. Simply seeing a price in Velocity Points doesn’t mean you’re looking at the same type of booking.
I’m happy to spend an unreasonable amount of time choosing a restaurant for a weekend in Melbourne. Flights tend to receive less romantic consideration: something on Friday afternoon, something home on Sunday, preferably without an alarm that ruins the weekend before it begins. But a little attention at the booking stage can make your Velocity Points useful sooner than you might think, particularly if you’ve been leaving them untouched for an unspecified future extravagance.
You don’t need to turn this into a hobby. It helps to understand what you’re booking, give yourself a few options and remember that a balance earned partly through ordinary purchases can contribute towards a perfectly good weekend away.
What’s different about a Reward Seat?
A Reward Seat is made available to book using Velocity Points for the base fare, with taxes, fees and carrier charges payable in addition. Availability is limited. A flight might have seats available to purchase without having Reward Seats available.
The 5,900 Velocity Points starting price applies to a one-way domestic Economy Reward Seat in Zone 1. It isn’t a universal price for domestic travel, and it won’t necessarily be available on the flight you want.
According to Velocity’s published redemption table, Zone 1 covers flights of up to 600 miles, including Sydney to Melbourne. Domestic Economy Reward Seats in this zone currently range from 5,900 to 12,900 Velocity Points, plus taxes, fees and carrier charges, depending on availability and demand.
The practical takeaway is to check the Reward Seat option before assuming you need a much larger balance. Look at the additional payment as well as the Velocity Points required, and search the return journey before making any non-refundable plans.
Finding an appealing flight out is only half the exercise. You still have to get home, ideally at a time that doesn’t require an explanation to your employer.
How does Points + Pay compare?
Points + Pay lets you redeem Velocity Points towards an eligible paid flight and pay the remaining amount in money. It’s a different booking option from a Reward Seat, so the Velocity Points required and the money payable can differ.
That gives you another option when you want a particular departure. You might find a Reward Seat that suits your plans, decide to use Points + Pay towards a paid flight, or pay entirely in money and keep your Velocity Points for another trip.
Virgin Australia’s Quick Compare search displays Reward Seats, Points + Pay and money fares together in a calendar view on its website and app. You can compare dates and booking options without treating each as a separate research project.
I’d judge the result by the whole booking: the departure time, Velocity Points required, additional payment, baggage and change conditions. A flight that requires fewer Velocity Points may be less appealing if it also requires another night in a hotel.
How do you find Reward Seats that suit your plans?
Start searching early, while you still have some flexibility. If Friday afternoon isn’t producing anything useful, check Friday morning or Thursday evening. Consider a different return time before dismissing the trip altogether.
There’s no guarantee that booking early will secure a Reward Seat. Seats are limited and may not be available on every flight, at peak times or at the lowest advertised Points level. Having enough Velocity Points doesn’t guarantee availability either.
Still, searching several workable departures gives you more options than insisting on one. The important word is workable. There’s little satisfaction in finding a redemption that turns a leisurely weekend into a logistical ordeal.
I’d search flights before booking the hotel, particularly for a trip where the destination is still up for discussion. It’s much easier to adjust your plans before you’ve mentally installed yourself beside the pool.
Can you earn Velocity Points without flying?
Yes. Everyday purchases with participating partners can help build your balance between trips, without requiring a credit card.
Flybuys is a straightforward example. Once your accounts are linked, 1,000 Flybuys points can be transferred into 500 Velocity Points. You can transfer manually or switch on Auto Transfer, which transfers Flybuys points in increments of 1,000. Eligible shopping at participating Flybuys retailers can therefore contribute towards a future booking.
You can also link your Velocity membership to the My 7-Eleven app and scan when buying fuel or making eligible in-store purchases to earn Velocity Points. Partner conditions and product exclusions apply.
The sensible approach is to start with places you already shop. Link the relevant accounts, remember to scan and check that you’re meeting the earning requirements.
I wouldn’t buy something unwanted to earn a bonus, or drive past a better-priced option simply because another retailer offers Velocity Points. But if you’re making the purchase anyway, it’s worth having the account set up. The groceries are expensive enough without overlooking a benefit attached to buying them.
Member deals and partner offers deserve the same scrutiny. Check whether activation is required, who qualifies and when the offer ends. An offer that fits your normal purchases can help; one that sends you shopping for things you hadn’t considered owning needs a little more thought.
Could you use your Velocity Points for an upgrade instead?
Sometimes you already have the flight booked and would simply like a more comfortable seat.
On eligible Virgin Australia domestic flights, Velocity members travelling on Economy Choice or Flex fares can request a Business Class upgrade using Velocity Points. Economy Lite and Economy Reward Seat fares aren’t eligible for UpgradeMe Points upgrades. Availability and other conditions apply.
Velocity’s published table currently lists 10,000 Velocity Points per passenger, per sector for a domestic upgrade on routes of up to 600 miles, including Sydney to Melbourne. That’s in addition to the eligible flight you’ve already purchased.
For an early departure before a long day, or the journey home afterwards, that might be an appealing use of your balance. Check eligibility before buying a flight with an upgrade in mind, though. If an upgrade can’t be confirmed, eligible members may be able to join a waitlist, but a request doesn’t guarantee Business Class.
Can you compare flights in ChatGPT?
Virgin Australia’s app in ChatGPT lets you describe the trip you’re considering and compare a summary of fares, Points + Pay options and Reward Seat availability in one place.
You could ask it to compare Sydney to Melbourne flights across several dates, for example, making clear that you want to see Reward Seat options as well as paid flights.
Once you find a suitable option, you’re directed to Virgin Australia’s website to complete the booking. Check the final availability, price and conditions before committing.
However you search, the habit is the same: check the alternatives before reaching for your card. Reward Seats are worth looking for, everyday earning can help you reach the required balance, and a little flexibility can give you more choice.
Once you find a trip that works, you can stop researching. There’s still the considerably more enjoyable business of booking dinner.
