The Oscar nominations for 2023 have provided their very own plot twist.

While many – present company included – assumed the 95th Academy Awards would favour the typical bait films such as Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans and Todd Field’s Tár starring homegrown talent Cate Blanchett, this year, there’s been considerable love for the more populist releases.

Indie juggernaut A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once hasn’t just revived the career of child star turned stunt coordinator Key Huy Quan and brought about a renewed interest in screen veteran Michelle Yeoh. Coming in at the top of the class, The Daniels’ touching sci-fi adventure/comedy has earned 11 nods across multiple categories, as well as officially entering the Best Picture race.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is closely followed by the World War I epic that made a splash on Netflix last year, Edward Berger’s adaptation of All Quiet On The Western Front, which only trails behind by a single nomination.

Elvis (8), The Banshees of Insherin (8), Top Gun: Maverick (6), and Avatar: The Way of Water (4) have also been recognised for their efforts in restoring the cinema experience post-COVID/post-streaming.

And just because everyone’s rootin’ for him, we’d like to (gleefully) point out that Brendan Fraser is in the running for Best Actor thanks to his performance in The Whale.
