- For the first time in almost a decade and a half, Tom Cruise is venturing outside the action genre with Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger.
- Not much is known about the black comedy aside from who’s involved, not even an official synopsis – all we’ve been told is that this will be a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
- Digger release date (Australia): October 1st, 2026.
The last time Tom Cruise appeared in a non-action role, Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ was topping the charts, President Barack Obama was campaigning against Mitt Romney, and Overly Attached Girlfriend was the hot meme of the season.
In fact, across the 27 roles the honorary Academy Award winner has taken on since 2000, only a mere six of them haven’t involved stunt work or action choreography – two being narration credits for documentaries, one being an Austin Powers cameo (which, some of you may recall, kinda involved an action sequence).

All this, of course, is to simply highlight the sheer novelty of Tom Cruise’s forthcoming black comedy Digger, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant), which now has an enigmatic first teaser trailer.
Without even an ounce of exaggeration: we know almost nothing about what’s to come aside from the involvement of an ensemble cast that also features Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, as well as Emma D’Arcy – and the tagline from Warner Bros poster, indicating this will be a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.”

The footage previewed today – soundtracked by The Gorillaz’s ‘O Green World’ – provides no further clarity. All we’ve seen is the silhouette of Cruise’s Digger Rockwell in shorts, cowboy boots, plus prosthetics, dancing with a shovel across various mundane scenery.
In addition to directing, Digger has been penned by Iñárritu in collaboration with Sabina Berman, Nicolás Giacobone, as well as the filmmaker’s Birdman and The Revenant co-writer Alexander Dinelaris Jr. The cinematography, on the other hand, has been accomplished by Emmanuel Lubezki – another key contributor to the aforementioned Iñárritu films, along with Gravity, Children of Men, and Tree of Life.
Digger starring Tom Cruise has set an Aussie release date for October 1st, 2026 – check out the teaser trailer above.
