Ok, perhaps we can tolerate the monotonous merry-go-round of Hollywood’s sequels, prequels, remakes, and whatever the hell a multiverse is if, occasionally, Michael B. Jordan decides he’s going to take his exceedingly good directorial lens outside the confines of the boxing ring and into one of the heist genre’s more cult titles: The Thomas Crown Affair.
And if the first-look trailer is anything to go by, it’s set to be one of the Oscar winner’s slickest thrillers yet.

Directed by, produced by, and starring Michael B. Jordan (who first pitched this to MGM back in 2016), Jordan steps into the titular role of the globetrotting thief knowing full well of the title’s cinematic legacy – Steve McQueen immortalised the character in the hugely popular 1968 original, pulling off bank jobs in Boston for kicks, dune buggies and polo mallets included.
That was before 007 himself, Pierce Brosnan, swapped Bond for burglary in the 1999 remake, eyeing a stolen Monet in Manhattan, sneaking a Trojan horse into the Met and trading McQueen's polo match for a high-stakes catamaran race.
So whilst it may be easy to paint 2027’s release with the same brush as its predecessors, Jordan’s already said, “I didn’t want a reboot. I wanted a reimagination. The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn’t land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher. Still got the fashion, romance.”
Adria Arjona (Hit Man, Andor) takes the investigator role opposite Jordan, and the cast filling out the rest of it – Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, Ruth Negga, Aubrey Plaza, and Paapa Essiedu – is not the kind of list studios put together for a routine remake.
Jordan’s reportedly been sitting on this project for 10 years; a long time to be mulling any creative project, let alone through Hollywood’s famously short attention span. People lose interest, the rights get tangled up, and the whole thing goes the way these passion projects always do. But after watching the trailer, March 5, 2027 is going to be well worth the wait.
