  • HBO Max prequel series It: Welcome To Derry has a teaser trailer featuring Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd as the terrifying Pennywise the Clown.
  • Set 27 years before the events of the first Andy Muschietti film, it’ll follow a new cast of children fighting to survive in the titular Derry, Maine.
  • Welcome To Derry release date: Spring 2025.

In the age of IP-driven content, cinematic universe expansions are pretty much inevitable. All you can hope for is that said IP is worth expanding. And based on an early glimpse of HBO Max’s long-gestating It prequel series, the Stephen King classic appears to be more than a blatant cash grab.

Titled It: Welcome To Derry, the clock has obviously been turned back for this one – all the way back to 1962 – with an all-new cast of Losers Club substitutes, plenty of missing children, and Bill Skarsgård reprising his role as eldritch horror entity, Pennywise the Clown.

Per the King canon, what we know as Pennywise is an ancient alien that found its way to Earth eons ago, and cyclically hunts children in the fictitious town of Derry, Maine, for an entire year between 27-year hibernations. Keen-eyed fans of the Andy Muschietti films will also know that Welcome To Derry takes place around the same time African-American nightclub, The Black Spot, burns down (a target of white nationalists in the original novel).

Skarsgård is joined by Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso. It: Welcome To Derry has been developed for television by the aforementioned Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (It, It: Chapter Two) and Jason Fuchs (It: Chapter Two, Wonder Woman, Argylle). Andy Muschietti has also directed multiple episodes.

As for a release date, HBO Max has yet to confirm exactly when It: Welcome To Derry is scheduled to premiere beyond “spring 2025” – keep an eye out for updates here and check out the teaser trailer above.
