The 12 Best Wellness & Recovery Centres In Sydney

From spectacular new bathhouses and members-only wellness clubs to five-star spas and ice baths that'll have you questioning your life choices, these are Sydney's best places to switch off.

Sydney has never been a city short on people who take their health seriously. Between the 5 AM run clubs, ocean swimmers, Pilates devotees, and blokes who discuss their sleep scores as though they're quarterly earnings, the Harbour City has turned looking after yourself into something approaching a competitive sport. And, well, it’s fair to say business is booming.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy was valued at US$6.8 trillion (~AU$9.7 trillion) in 2024, with projections suggesting it could reach almost US$9.8 trillion by 2029. Clearly, the same crowd who once wore their 80-hour working weeks as a badge of honour are beginning to realise that being busy ain't much use if you're running on fumes.

Fortunately, Sydney's wellness and recovery scene has evolved well beyond the occasional remedial massage and overpriced green juice.

In recent years, a new generation of bathhouses, recovery studios, and private wellness clubs has arrived, bringing everything from traditional Finnish saunas and magnesium pools to hyperbaric chambers and increasingly elaborate longevity treatments.

Some are beautifully designed places to spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing. Others cater to the time-poor professional who wants to get in, sweat it out, and be back behind a desk within the hour. And a handful appear to have been conceived for people with considerably more money than time.

Whether you're recovering from a marathon, attempting to reverse the consequences of a particularly large weekend, or simply looking for somewhere to escape your inbox, we've rounded up 12 of the best wellness and recovery spots in Sydney, including one particularly ambitious new club preparing to open its doors.

Sense Of Self (Surry Hills)

Melbourne's wellness crowd has been banging on about Sense of Self for years, and having finally opened its first Sydney outpost, it's not particularly difficult to understand why.

Housed inside the former Sydney Antiques Centre on South Dowling Street, this sprawling 1,200-square-metre bathhouse is a genuine architectural spectacle designed by Ritz&Ghougassian.

Across two levels, more than 90,000 hand-laid bricks stand alongside the warehouse's original concrete columns and windows, creating an environment that feels somewhere between an ancient Roman bathhouse and a particularly ambitious contemporary art installation.

Inside, you'll find expansive magnesium mineral pools, a traditional hammam steam room, a walk-through cold plunge, and two Finnish saunas, including one the operators claim is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. There's even a dedicated listening room with a commissioned soundscape, which feels rather civilised compared with another half-hour of doomscrolling.

The experience unfolds over two hours, with guests encouraged to explore the maze of bathing spaces at their own pace. Phones are strictly prohibited, and weekday mornings are deliberately quiet, meaning there's absolutely nowhere to hide from your own thoughts.

It's one of the most impressive wellness spaces to open in Sydney in recent memory, and at $75 for an off-peak session, the experience feels surprisingly accessible given the extraordinary attention to detail. Treatments and massages are also available for those looking to make a proper afternoon of it.

Address: 529 South Dowling St, Surry Hills NSW 2010
Contact: (02) 6412 3619
Opening Hours: Tuesday – Sunday (7 AM – 9:45 PM); Monday, closed.

Capybara Bathing (Surry Hills)

If the idea of sharing a hot bath with strangers sounds slightly odd, Capybara Bathing might just change your mind.

Founded by a group of Sydney creatives, including several architects and a ceramicist, this Surry Hills bathhouse has quickly established itself as one of the city's most interesting wellness destinations, drawing inspiration from Japanese onsens, Korean bathhouses and traditional European bathing cultures; it's an intimate, beautifully designed space.

Terracotta tiles, warm timber, sculptural forms, and carefully selected artwork provide a welcome departure from the clinical aesthetic of your typical recovery centre. The facilities include a magnesium-infused thermal bath, traditional hot-stone sauna, steam room, heated stone seating, and cold plunge, with a communal lounge designed for lingering between sessions.

In September 2026, Capybara doubled its footprint with the opening of The Other Side, an adjoining space featuring a considerably larger sauna, additional bathing facilities, and a more theatrical approach to the experience. There's even a small natural wine bar attached, although whether that counts as recovery is probably open to debate.

What sets Capybara apart is its sense of personality. There's a rotating program of guided bathing experiences, sound baths, and traditional sauna rituals, alongside the standard 90-minute bathing sessions. It feels less like a business chasing the latest wellness trend and more like a genuinely interesting place to spend time. Sessions start from $65.

Address: Ground Floor, 235–239 Commonwealth St, Surry Hills NSW 2010

Reset Studio (Double Bay)

For a suburb that has never been particularly shy about spending money on looking good, it's surprising that Double Bay took this long to get a wellness studio quite as handsome as Reset.

Located on Knox Street, this beautifully designed sanctuary takes its cues from the sort of private residence you'd expect to find in the pages of Architectural Digest, with natural stone, warm timber, sculptural details, and carefully considered lighting creating an atmosphere that's a world away from your typical recovery centre.

The facilities are equally impressive. There's a traditional cedar sauna, magnesium spa, eucalyptus steam room, two ice baths, and vitamin C-infused showers, alongside private contrast therapy suites for those who'd rather not share their recovery session with complete strangers.

Perhaps the most striking feature is the Himalayan salt cave, an intimate, amber-lit room lined with enormous salt blocks that looks like something you'd find hidden beneath a particularly extravagant Swiss chalet.

Unlike the sprawling communal bathhouses popping up across Sydney, Reset’s more intimate sessions – 50-minute circuits – accommodate a maximum of five guests. Private sessions can be booked for individuals, couples or small groups. Full-body LED treatments, compression therapy, and other wellness offerings round out the menu.

With communal circuit sessions priced at $79 and private contrast therapy from $89, it sits firmly at the premium end of Sydney's recovery scene. But given the attention to detail and the fact that you're unlikely to be sharing a sauna with half of the Eastern Suburbs, it's not a particularly difficult proposition to justify.

Address: 15 Knox St, Double Bay NSW 2028
Contact: (02) 7205 7038
Opening Hours: Monday – Friday (8 AM – 8:30 PM); Saturday – Sunday (7 AM – 8:30 PM)

Sansara (Double Bay)

Coming Soon

If Sydney's wellness scene was already becoming a little ridiculous, Sansara is preparing to suggest that perhaps we haven't been taking the whole thing nearly seriously enough.

Occupying the new Ruby House development on Double Bay's Bay Street, this members-only wellness club takes the familiar combination of gym, bathhouse, and recovery centre and wraps it in something closely resembling a private members' club. It’s as if Pillars in the CBS landed in Double Bay and came with a fully equipped fitness centre.

The offering is divided into several interconnected spaces with a premium gym floor, a dedicated movement studio for Pilates, yoga, and breathwork, and a recovery suite with proposed treatments including IV infusions, hydrogen therapy, and red light therapy.

The centrepiece, however, is the bathhouse, where members will be able to move between magnesium pools, communal and female-only saunas, cold plunges, and an ice bucket before retreating to the tea bar.

The interiors are suitably extravagant, with warm natural stone, curved architectural details, timber joinery and soft lighting creating an atmosphere that's considerably closer to a luxury hotel than the average fitness club.

And because apparently all that self-improvement works up an appetite, there's Ruby's, an all-day restaurant overseen by the Bambini Group, offering everything from fresh seafood and seasonal produce to pasta. A members' lounge, co-working facilities and curated events program round out the offering.

Founded by Rory Warnock, Luke Champion, and Christian Jones, Sansara operates on an application-only membership model, with limited places and guest privileges. Membership pricing isn't publicly advertised, but given the location and facilities, we're going to hazard a guess that it isn't competing with Fitness First.

Originally announced for October 2026, the club is now targeting a November opening. Until then, the extraordinary renderings and ambitious facilities list make it one of Sydney's most intriguing forthcoming wellness destinations.

Address: Ruby House, 2 Bay St, Double Bay NSW 2028
Membership: Application only

Auriga Spa At Capella Sydney (Sydney CBD)

There's certainly no shortage of places to get a massage in Sydney, but few can compete with the sheer extravagance of Auriga Spa at Capella Sydney.

Housed on the sixth floor of the beautifully restored former Department of Education building, Auriga occupies what was once an art gallery, with soaring sandstone walls, subdued lighting, and an atmosphere that feels a million miles removed from the surrounding CBD.

At its heart is a spectacular 20-metre heated swimming pool, alongside a vitality pool, traditional sauna, steam room, experiential showers – even an ice fountain. It's an unusually comprehensive collection of facilities for a city hotel, not that we’re complaining.

The treatment menu is similarly ambitious, drawing inspiration from the phases of the moon, traditional wellness practices and Australian botanicals. Expect elaborate massage rituals, personalised body treatments, and private experiences designed to make a standard hour on the massage table feel positively pedestrian.

And while Auriga was originally reserved for hotel guests, the spa now welcomes outside visitors, with access to the pool facilities available to non-resident spa guests for an additional $80 per person for up to an hour.

It's certainly not cheap, but for sheer luxury and atmosphere, Auriga is among the finest wellness experiences in the country.

Address: Capella Sydney, 24 Loftus St, Sydney NSW 2000
Contact: (02) 9071 5010
Opening Hours: Monday – Wednesday (9 AM – 6 PM); Thursday – Saturday (9 AM – 9 PM); Sunday (9 AM – 6 PM)

Crown Spa (Barangaroo)

If Auriga represents Sydney's more understated approach to luxury, Crown Spa at Barangaroo sits proudly at the other end of the spectrum.

Perched on Level 6 of Crown Towers Sydney, this sprawling wellness sanctuary is every bit as extravagant as the hotel surrounding it, with polished stone, softly illuminated interiors and a level of service that leaves absolutely nothing to chance.

The centrepiece is the Aqua Retreat, a collection of thermal facilities designed for guests who'd prefer to spend their afternoon doing something other than sitting in a restaurant downstairs. A vitality spa, steam room, infrared sauna, and Swiss experience shower, alongside an extensive menu of massages, facials, and body treatments, mean you’re well covered whichever treatment you select.

For those who simply want to enjoy the thermal facilities, Aqua Retreat passes are priced at $105 per person from Monday to Thursday and $125 on weekends. Alternatively, access is included for one hour with eligible spa treatments lasting at least 60 minutes.

Between the immaculate interiors and highly polished service, Crown Spa remains one of Sydney's most luxurious wellness destinations.

And if you happen to emerge feeling particularly pleased with yourself, there are several very expensive restaurants downstairs to help bring you back to earth.

Escape Bathhouse (Chatswood)

It's not often that a wellness destination comes with a genuinely interesting architectural backstory, but Escape Bathhouse has managed to turn one of Sydney's North Shore landmarks into something rather special.

Housed inside the restored Seymour's Building on the Pacific Highway, Escape occupies a Spanish Mission-style property dating back to 1929. Its original terracotta tiles, arched openings, and decorative columns have been carefully preserved, while the interiors have been reimagined as a contemporary bathhouse with natural materials, considered lighting and a distinctly European sensibility.

Founded by Cam and Tasch D'Arcy, the couple behind the award-winning Sierra Escape accommodation in Mudgee, the venue takes a refreshingly straightforward approach to wellness. Inside, you'll find a large magnesium mineral pool, traditional sauna, aromatic steam room, and dedicated cold plunges, alongside relaxation areas and massage treatments.

There's also the Placebo Bar, where guests can enjoy non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, and a bite to eat between sessions. The bathhouse accommodates a maximum of around 30 people at a time, meaning you're unlikely to spend half your visit awkwardly waiting for a space in the sauna.

While the atmosphere is generally social, dedicated quiet sessions are available for those who'd prefer to enjoy their recovery without being subjected to someone else's weekend recap.

With early morning sessions starting from $39.95 and standard 90-minute visits from $65.95, it's a compelling addition to Sydney's increasingly impressive bathing scene, particularly for anyone north of the bridge.

Opening Hours: Tuesday – Wednesday (7 AM – 7 PM); Thursday – Friday (7 AM – 9 PM); Saturday (7 AM – 6:30 PM); Sunday (8 AM – 6 PM); Monday, closed.

ONSEN By Housed (Sydney CBD)

For anyone who thought the modern gym membership had reached the absolute limits of extravagance, ONSEN By Housed has arrived to suggest otherwise.

Located at 529 Kent Street, inside the former home of Tetsuya's, the Japanese-inspired wellness club brings together a luxury fitness facility, communal bathhouse, and Pilates studio in one beautifully designed CBD address.

But where Sydney’s latest wellness space truly shines is in the private members' lounge, an exclusive setting in the heart of the city that lean heavily into contemporary Japanese minimalism, with warm timber, subdued lighting, natural materials, and intimate lounge spaces.

Members can start their day in the performance training suite, move into a yoga or Pilates class, recover in the communal onsen and traditional or infrared saunas, then settle into the botanical bar and co-working lounge to deal with whatever the working day has in store.

Founding memberships are advertised at $99 per week, with a limited introductory offer reducing the first fortnight to $49 per week. The more comprehensive Lounge Membership costs $299 per week, with memberships subject to a six-month term.

Expensive? Yes. But for the CBD professional who's already spending a small fortune across several fitness, recovery and co-working memberships, the prospect of consolidating everything into one might not be as ridiculous as it first sounds.

Soak Bathhouse (Alexandria & Bondi Junction)

Sydney's growing obsession with communal bathing has produced some fairly spectacular new venues, and Soak Bathhouse is making a strong case for being among the best of them.

Originally founded on the Gold Coast, Soak arrived in Sydney with a sprawling 700-square-metre bathhouse in Alexandria before expanding into Bondi Junction, bringing its decidedly social approach to wellness to two very different corners of the city.

Both locations offer the kind of experience that would've seemed almost comically indulgent a decade ago. Guests can expect enormous magnesium mineral pools, cedarwood saunas, steam rooms, and cold plunges maintained at a rather generous 12.5°C, alongside the usual infrared saunas and massage treatments.

The Alexandria venue is a particularly handsome affair, with warm travertine interiors, curved architectural details, and lush greenery creating the impression of a luxury resort hidden inside one of Sydney's busiest industrial neighbourhoods. Bondi Junction follows a similarly polished formula, with expansive mineral pools heated to 34°C and 38°C.

Where traditional day spas tend to encourage silence and introspection, Soak is perfectly happy for you to bring a mate, have a yarn, and spend an afternoon alternating between hot water and cold.

It's wellness with a social life, with 90-minute sessions starting from $59.95 and selected morning experiences from $39.95; it needn't be reserved for special occasions, either.

Addresses:

  • Alexandria: Ground Floor, 25 Bourke Rd, Alexandria NSW 2015
  • Bondi Junction: 88 Ebley St, Bondi Junction NSW 2022

Contact: Alexandria: 0499 755 290; Bondi Junction: 0499 908 295

38° The Bathhouse (Bondi Beach)

Considering Bondi has spent the better part of two decades perfecting the art of looking healthy, it seems only appropriate that one of Sydney's more established wellness destinations is located directly opposite the beach.

Formerly known as Slow House, 38° The Bathhouse has evolved into a luxurious communal bathing destination centred around its signature magnesium pool, heated to the temperature from which the venue takes its name.

Located beneath The Pacific Building on Campbell Parade, the sprawling 700-square-metre bathhouse brings together hot magnesium spas, a traditional Finnish salt sauna, steam room, cold plunge pools, and private infrared sauna suites – all within a polished, contemporary space that feels worlds away from the chaos of the promenade above.

The idea is relatively straightforward: spend 90 minutes moving between hot and cold facilities, take a few breaks to relax, and leave feeling considerably less stressed.

There's also a range of private treatments and curated experiences, including massages, facials, and lymphatic drainage – perfect for couples or anyone looking to turn an ordinary recovery session into something a little more indulgent.

The bathhouse also offers dedicated silent sessions on weekday mornings, which seems like a particularly sensible idea in a suburb where everyone has a podcast and something to say.

With sessions starting from $39 for early morning visits, it's surprisingly accessible for its postcode.

Èliva Spa At InterContinental Coogee Beach (Coogee)

Sydney's luxury hotels have been getting increasingly serious about wellness, and the new Èliva Spa at InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach is among the more compelling additions to the city's recovery scene.

Located on Level 1 of the beachfront hotel, Èliva combines a traditional luxury spa experience with a surprisingly comprehensive thermal recovery offering, making it equally appealing for an indulgent afternoon or a proper post-training reset.

The facilities include three warm magnesium mineral pools, a traditional salt sauna, an infrared sauna, two cold plunge baths, a crystal steam room, and vitamin C-infused showers. There's also a dedicated recovery lounge featuring compression boots, LED light therapy, vibroacoustic treatments, and other wellness equipment.

For those who'd rather leave the hard work to someone else, a selection of massages, facials, and body treatments is available across four private treatment rooms and a couples suite. Each treatment begins with a personalised essential oil blend at the spa's herbal ritual bar, which is a rather elaborate way to start a massage, but we're certainly not complaining.

The real appeal, of course, is the setting. With Coogee Beach just outside and the hotel's impressive dining and accommodation offerings close at hand, it's easy to turn a quick recovery session into a considerably longer affair.

Access to the thermal facilities is available to eligible spa guests and Èliva members, so it's worth checking the booking conditions before turning up.

1Remedy (Potts Point)

Rounding out our list is 1Remedy, a Potts Point sauna house that makes a compelling case for keeping things simple.

While Sydney's wellness scene has become increasingly obsessed with longevity technology, vitamin infusions and treatments involving equipment that looks like it belongs in a NASA laboratory, 1Remedy has built its entire experience around three things: sweat, plunge and reset.

The process begins in a traditional Finnish sauna operating at temperatures of around 80–90°C, followed by an ice bath maintained at a rather unforgiving 6–8°C. Once you've regained the ability to form complete sentences, you retreat to the relaxation lounge before repeating the process.

It's a format that has been practised in various forms across Scandinavia for centuries, although the interiors at 1Remedy are considerably more polished than the average timber shack beside a frozen Finnish lake.

The entire experience unfolds over 90 minutes, with the emphasis on creating an approachable, communal environment rather than chasing the latest wellness trend. The team is also happy to guide first-timers through the process, which is probably reassuring when you're staring down a tub of water cold enough to make your teeth hurt.

With casual sessions around $45 and multi-visit passes available for regulars, it's one of the more accessible options in Sydney. Sometimes, all you need is a very hot room, a very cold bath, and an hour and a half where you can’t reach your phone.

Address: 16 Earl Pl, Potts Point NSW 2011

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday (10 AM – 8:30 PM); Saturday – Sunday (8:45 AM – 8 PM)
