Colour experts Pantone have announced the peculiar โLiving Coralโ as their colour of the year for 2019. The pink shade known officially as Pantone 16-1546 has been described by The Pantone Color Institute as an โanimating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge.โ
For those unaware of Pantone, the famed institute has been choosing their colour of the year for the past two decades, with the choice influenced by the current global cultural climate. Last year the vibrant purple shade โUltra Violetโ took the crown, with โLiving Coralโ chosen to โdemonstrate the authentic and immersive experiences that enable a connection and intimacy.
โColour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral,โ said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. โWith consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.โ
The colour is very reminiscent of salmon, a shade that was very big a few years back with the fashion industry. While not exactly my cup of tea, itโs certainly a lighthearted colour with a neutral feel that will no doubt be seen everywhere in the coming months.
