Bugatti’s $40K Road Bike Is So Fast The Tour de France Wouldn’t Let You Race It

  • Bugatti has announced its latest non-automotive project as the lightning-fast Factor ONE road bike, set to turn all the right heads at the coffee shop.
  • Arriving as a limited edition of just 250 units, its design is deliberately focused on pure aerodynamics and, as a result, is not UCI (cycling’s competitive governing body) legal.
  • It comes with a local RRP of $39,600, and inquiries for purchase are currently open.

There’s a certain kind of engineering project that exists not to win races, but to answer the question of what’s possible when you create without limits. For Bugatti and British cycling outfit Factor Bikes, that question was a straightforward one: what happens when you throw the UCI rulebook in the bin and simply build the fastest road bike possible?

The result is the Bugatti Factor ONE, an ultra-limited aero road bike capped at 250 individually numbered units worldwide, and priced at $39,600. It is, by any measure, a halo object.

Bugatti Factor ONE

With the original ONE, a racing machine that’s regarded as one of the fastest UCI-legal road bikes in the world, Factor had already demonstrated how much was achievable within the rulebook. Understandably, when Bugatti stepped into the frame, those constraints were discarded entirely.

The most significant departure is the front fork, which measures 147mm across (well beyond the UCI’s 115mm limit), engineered to optimise airflow and reduce drag at the front end. A fairing wraps the brake calliper to further smooth airflow. A solution that, according to Factor, was developed for the original bike but couldn’t be made to work within regulation.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen such a massively wide front-end on a bike, with the Team GB x Lotus track cycling bikes made for the Tokyo Olympic Games taking a similarly broad stance.

However, there’s a big difference between the aerodynamic demands of road cycling and cutting laps of the wooden boards, making this project between Bugatti and Factor bikes all the more interesting.

The finishing specifications are equally uncompromising. Black Inc Bugatti Hyper 62 wheels with co-moulded rim-to-rim carbon spokes weigh just 1,298 grams per pair, while it’s also fitted with a custom Carbon-Ti crankset, a CeramicSpeed bottom bracket, and an Alcantara-wrapped Selle Italia saddle to round out the build.

Aesthetically, the bike carries Bugatti’s distinctive two-tone split graphic and 3K twill carbon weave (the same treatment found on the marque’s multi-million-pound hypercars) with Rembrandt Bugatti’s iconic Dancing Elephant emblem positioned at the front.

Bugatti Factor ONE

Since it can’t be raced in UCI-sanctioned competition, the Bugatti Factor ONE is squarely aimed at collectors, enthusiasts, and athletes who want the fastest machine possible, regardless of where they can ride it. Which, frankly, sounds about right for anything with “Bugatti” splashed across it.
