Seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton has revealed he’s closing in on a Mercedes contract extension, shutting down the viral rumours rival team Scuderia Ferrari were set to make him a £40 million offer in the process.

“My team are having discussions with the team [Mercedes] in the background and we’re almost there,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1‘s David Croft.

“Naturally when you’re in contract negotiations there’s always going to be speculation. Ultimately, unless you hear it from me, that’s all it is.”

In previous years, Hamilton has handled negotiations with Team Principal & CEO Toto Wolff by himself, but has now opted to delegate the responsibility to his management team.

He added: “Having a team focus on that so I can just do my job is a much better position than I was in before because I remember I used to do negotiations on my own and it was very stressful, so I don’t have to do that anymore.”

“This is the first time that I’ve not been negotiating myself. I have a great team in the background doing all the work so I can focus on the job at hand.

“I say what I want and that’s what we’re working towards. Hopefully in the coming weeks [there will be an announcement].”

“I’m not looking to be tempted into anything else.”

Sir Lewis Hamilton is, of course, approaching the tail end of his current two-year / $147 million (AUD) Mercedes contract, which was inked back in mid-2021 amidst a similar level of speculation.

On that occasion, conversations surrounding an imminent retirement had been sparked, with fuel added to the fire when negotiations stalled for undisclosed reasons that summer break.

“It is hard to believe it‘s been nearly nine years working with this incredible team and I’m excited we’re going to continue our partnership for two more years,” Hamilton announced after the extension’s confirmation.

“We’ve accomplished so much together, but we still have a lot to achieve – both on and off the track. I’m incredibly proud and grateful of how Mercedes has supported me in my drive to improve diversity and equality in our sport.”

“We‘re entering a new era of car which will be challenging and exciting and I can’t wait to see what else we can achieve together.”
