Melbourne Fashion Week runs from the 19th to the 25th of October, and for the third year running, 1800 Tequila returns as its Official Spirits Partner.
The common thread is craft. More than 90% of the designers, models, and students on the schedule are Melbourne-made, and the best of their work is built the slow way: patterns drafted and redrafted, fabric cut by hand, a single seam reworked until it sits just right. 1800 is made with the same discipline. Eleven generations of the Beckmann family have produced tequila from 100% Blue Weber agave for more than 250 years, waiting the better part of a decade for each plant to mature before it’s harvested by hand. On paper, a tailored jacket and a bottle of tequila have little in common. In practice, both come down to skilled hands, knowledge passed down, and a refusal to cut corners. Neither is in a hurry.
Melbourne Fashion Week’s two biggest nights are at Younghusband in Kensington on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd October, where guests are met at the door with a trio of 1800 serves – the Stiletto Spritz, a Tommy’s Margarita or the 1800 Paloma, the latter the hero serve of the week. And when the runway wraps, the night needn’t. A runway-inspired cocktail menu runs across the city at Good Heavens, Hotel Nacional, Inuman, The Atrium on 35, Crane, and Fonda Flinders St, for anyone looking to carry things on or close out the evening with a nightcap.
Which raises the question of what to wear when all eyes are on the threads. We put it to Shaun Birley, the men's style and travel confidant who has spent more than a decade guiding Australian men on how to dress and how to live well in every corner of the world. His approach is not what you would expect.
"Most people pick the drink to match the outfit," he says. "I do it the other way around. Work out what you want in your hand at six o'clock and the rest of it sorts itself out."
Here are his three pairings for the week.

01. The Beige Linen Suit & The 1800 Paloma
The look: A beige linen suit from Suitsupply, worn with a white singlet underneath and nothing else going on. Match it with some dark brown Aquila loafers and a Tudor Black Bay on the wrist to stop the whole thing floating away. It's built for the daylight end of the week: the City Square runways, the pop-ups, the long lunch that gets a little carried away. "Good quality linen is honest," Birley says. "It might crease, it might move, but it looks better after four hours than it did at the start. Don't fight it. The singlet is my time-again trick. The moment you put a collared shirt under there, you've added a layer of effort nobody – in Melbourne's fashion crowd particularly – asked for."
The serve: The 1800 Paloma is the brand’s hero serve for Fashion Week, and it’s the natural pairing for the lightest suit of the week. Like the linen, it’s crisp, breezy and built for warm spring evenings: 1800 Blanco, lime, agave nectar, a pinch of salt and a wash of grapefruit soda, with a jalapeño ring doing the heavy lifting on the finish. It lands sweet and summery with a bitter grapefruit edge and a fruity pepper fade, a reminder of just how much nuance a well-made tequila can carry. At Younghusband, it comes in a 200ml format made for a runway, when you have one hand free and nowhere to put a glass down. "Refreshing, not serious," as Birley puts it. "Same brief as the suit."

02. The Navy Double Breasted & The 1800 Margarita
The look: A dark navy double-breasted from BOSS, worn with a faintly striped light shirt, a knitted tie and black Oxfords. The Black Bay stays on. This is the midweek workhorse, the one that handles the 1800 Tequila Nights at Younghusband and whatever comes after without a second thought. "It's Mr Consistent," Birley says. "You know exactly what you're getting, and it's never out of place. Front row at six, dinner at nine, still right at eleven." His one concession to Melbourne: when the weather turns, or the night loosens up, the shirt and tie come out and a plain tee goes in. Same jacket, different evening.
The serve: The 1800 Margarita is the classic in every regard, which is exactly why it belongs here. 1800 Blanco, lime juice, agave syrup and a half ounce of fresh-squeezed orange, shaken and strained into a salted rocks glass with a lime wedge. Fresh lemon zest on the nose, clean and dry, tart lime through the middle. Nothing hidden and nothing to hide behind, which is the test of a good one. If you’re moving through town, the full 1800 menu is pouring at Crane and Fonda Flinders St.

03. The Midnight Blue Dinner Suit & The 1800 Cristalini
The look: A midnight blue shawl lapel dinner suit from Oscar Hunt, with a cummerbund, a velvet bow tie and Oxfords polished to the point of rudeness. Glasses on, because Birley reckons they do more for a black tie look than any amount of jewellery. Save it for the closing runway at 1 Hotel Melbourne on the Sunday, which is the night the week is waiting for. "Midnight blue reads blacker than black under lights," he says. "Black goes flat on camera. This doesn't. And a shawl lapel is the key decision that does all the work for you. Once it's on, you stop thinking about it, and it turns heads for a good reason."
The serve: The Cristalini proves the point about craft. 1800 Cristalino, Manzanilla sherry, blanc vermouth and two dashes of orange bitters, stirred and strained into a chilled Nick & Nora with a manicured lemon peel and, if you are in the mood, a spoon of caviar on the side. Floral and faintly caramelled, honeyed sweetness cut with a coastal brininess, finishing long, mineral, and dry on citrus, sea salt and a soft touch of oak. It is the nightcap for the end of the week. “Silky, refined, made for after dark,” Birley says. “Which is the same sentence I’d use for the tux.”
