Hamilton Revives Iconic Military Grail Watch For 250 Years Of The USA
Hamilton has unveiled a new Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm inspired by the ultra-rare FAPD 5101 military watch.

Hamilton's rich and storied history on the frontline needs little introduction, having proudly supplied watches, timers, and precision instruments to the U.S. military for decades.
The story goes that through the Second World War, Hamilton famously halted all commercial production to maintain a supply of more than one million timepieces to Allied forces. That’s three years off the market, by choice, to service something larger. In a horological world saturated with tasteful brand stories, it certainly stands as one of the more consequential.
Years later, Hamilton still maintains its strong military connection and proud American history, championing a line of contemporary pieces across Aviation, Field, and Navy. Pragmatic pieces, but equally impressive to watch collectors across the U.S. and beyond.
And now, the American-Swiss brand returns with a limited anniversary edition of one of its most popular contemporary pieces, the new Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm.
But before we unpack that, it’s important to understand the timepiece that first paved the way – one that can count its longevity on a singular calendar month.
Distributed to the U.S. Air Force through September 1970 for deployment during the Vietnam War, the FAPD 5101 was a navigator's watch that carried the brand's lineage in the most literal sense.
Its story feels almost implausible – a watch that was only meant to exist for a singular month. Surviving originals are exceptionally scarce and are widely considered grail pieces among serious Hamilton military collectors.
Today’s Khaki Field release shares the proportions of the original almost exactly: a 36mm matte stainless steel case that’s perhaps on the smaller side by today’s inflated standards, but was once considered oversized for improved legibility. These days, the watch’s Super-LumiNova Grade X2 on the hands and dial delivers that, even in more challenging environments.
Fixed bars replace the standard spring bars, a functional detail carried over from the military issue to keep the strap locked in place under pressure. The acrylic box-shaped crystal is another deliberate callback, giving the watch a character that’s perhaps more consistent with the period from which it originates. So too, the magnetic dust cover that harks back to the vintage reference.
Inside the beating heart of the FAPD 5101 was the Calibre 684, a modified movement that was only ever used in this one watch. Rather than simply replicate history, Hamilton has chosen to modernise it, equipping the Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm with its in-house H-50 manual-wind movement.
Offering 80 hours of power reserve, it gives wearers considerably more flexibility between winds, particularly useful for a watch rooted in utility and reliability.
In a generous nod to its enduring inspiration, the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36mm will be exclusively produced throughout 2026 to celebrate 250 years of the United States.
Slightly longer than the 30-day period that put its predecessor on the horological map, but a nice touch that does more to remember one of Hamilton’s most fascinating military releases.
At just AU$1,100, it’s a whole lot of watch at that price, and lands as one of the more considered commemorative releases of the year.
