Longines’ recent onslaught of stunning heritage models, including the most recent Heritage Classic has, understandably, shifted attention away from the brand’s backbone collections. What these heritage watches have gotten so spot-on in terms of design, is a seamless intertwining of classic and contemporary – a recipe that has, in recent years, begun to make its way into the Master and Sport collections.

The Longines HydroConquest Grey received a subtle but sensational update in 2019, with a new, less crowded, ceramic bezel insert that elevates the model far beyond its predecessor. Complemented by a contemporary brushed 41mm steel case, sunburst dial and refined steel bracelet, it’s a package that wears well beyond its $2,175 price point.

With 300m of water resistance, a sound unidirectional bezel and an optional (and favourable rubber strap on also on a deployment clasp with diving extension) the HydroConquest is a competent diver and daily wearer. The 41mm case diameter is agreeable for almost any wrist size and slips easily under a shirt cuff if you wish to wear it formally, although I recommend the steel bracelet if you plan to wear it with a suit.

The smooth winding automatic Longines L.888 movement, with time and date functionality, is developed in-house by ETA and offers an impressive 64 hours of power reserve. It’s protected by an engraved steel case back to ensure ample water resistance.

After spending time with the Longines Master Moonphase earlier this year, and now the HydroConquest, it’s the overall build quality for the price that has left such a positive and lasting impression on me. At $2,175, the Longines HydroConquest Grey Dial is extremely affordable and extremely handsome. For me, the rubber ads a utilitarian angle to this elegant sports watching making the HydroConquest a versatile summer companion.
