The 100 Best Hotels In The World For 2022 Have Been Named & Ranked

The best hotels in the world aren’t often packaged up and delivered to luxury travellers in the form of a curated list, much like the world’s best restaurants are. There are fewer official bodies like The World’s 50 Best to help curate a bucket list of superlative stays, so travellers seeking out the world’s best hotels often have to rely on dedicated travel publications like Travel + Leisure. That’s exactly what’s happened done here, with T+L taking a more crowd-sourced approach and asking readers to chime in on their top hotels via the publication’s annual World’s Best Awards survey.

Of course, there are all the typical biases that come with such lists to consider. This isn’t a central panel of industry experts deciding on the world’s best hotels, but rather a mish-mash of Travel + Leisure readers. Granted, the majority seem to skew aspirational, favouring large and grand luxury hotels that make a statement and offer a variety of amenities alongside great service and distinctive locations.

More often than not, crowd-sourced lists like this are likely going to be more trustworthy as they’re coming from a wider variety of people from around the world. The important thing is that it’s not a popularity contest. It seems like results are tabulated and then given an overall score out of 100 by T+L, using the benchmarks of facilities, location, service, food and overall value.

Shangri La at The Shard, London comes in at No. 23 on this list of the best hotels in the world.

There’s always going to be a “country winner” coming from these types of lists. That is, the country with the most hotels featured in the top 100. Last year the big winner was India with 12 hotels placing in the top 100, but in 2022 the clear front-runner is the United States with 19 properties from the old-world Pickering House Inn in New Hampshire (no. 4) to the legendary Lowell in New York City (no. 8). India doesn’t slip far behind though, with 11 properties on this year’s best hotels list, tieing with Italy which boasts the top-spot with Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in the Tuscan commune of Montalcino.

Granted, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco looks like it’d appeal to an older demographic with its classic old-world aesthetic but, as T+L note in the copy, the property comes in at the top spot due to its “multisensory experience” patched together by an on-site winery and cooking school, tennis courts, a new complex with 19 suites, a restorative country-style spa and of course that immaculate location looking out over the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia Natural Park and the quaint town of Montalcino

Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco came in with a score of 99.25, just slightly higher than the runner-up which is the Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection in Santorini with a score of 99.22. Rounding out the top five are Waldorf Astoria Maldives (no. 3), the aforementioned Pickering House Inn in New Hampshire (no. 4), and a tie-beaker at no. 5 – One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives and Royal Mansour in Marrakech.

You’ll notice from the below list that there are actually 101 hotels named, which is due to various ties throughout the rankings. Plenty of properties clock in at the same score, which considers the above benchmarks.

Also note that, while Travel + Leisure‘s readers span the globe, most seem to be US-based travellers fanning out to typical hotspots across Europe, Asia and South Africa. Consider the skew and you can imagine that some incredible properties have been overlooked in places like Australia and Japan. Japan has definitely been overlooked.

Although I personally can confirm that the Four Seasons in Kyoto (no. 6) absolutely deserves to be on this list. That isn’t a brag – that’s the only hotel I’ve stayed at on this travel bucket list. And strangely enough, that’s the only hotel in Japan to make it on the list, ahead of more obvious choices like Aman Tokyo and Hoshinoya Tokyo.

And by the way, I know you’ve been wondering what the feature image is. That’s the Waldorf Astoria in Los Cabos Pedregal, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which just shot straight to the top of my must-stay list and no doubt yours as well.
