Similar to the original 1996 series and 2004 Doug Liman film of the same name, this inventive reboot series follows John (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine): spies who are paired by a mysterious agency that offers wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan in exchange for a high-risk life of espionage-based servitude.

โIโm not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,โ Glover, who also co-created and executive-produced alongside Francesca Sloane, told Entertainment Tonight.
โOnce I saw the original, I was like, โThis is a good date movie.โ And I was like, โMaybe I could make a good date show out of it?โ Like, you know, something me and my wife could watch together.โ

Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 has been confirmed by Amazon Prime Video
While Amazon Prime Video has now officially greenlit Mr & Mrs Smith season 2, sources indicate that neither Donald Glover nor Maya Erskine are returning as starring talent with the streamer being unusually evasive; although the former will still be credited as co-creator and executive producer alongside returning showrunner Francesa Sloane.

What will Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 be about?
[WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead]
We have to remember one thing: the showโs title doesnโt necessarily refer to Donald Glover and Maya Erskineโs John and Jane as the eponymous Smiths. Itโs simply a moniker assigned to the organisationโs employees, which pretty organically allows the show to adopt an anthology structure a la True Detective.
And as demonstrated throughout season 1, there are (and have been) plenty of other John and Jane Smiths.
In the opening sequence of the first episode (โFirst Dateโ), we witness the brutal firefight execution of another John (Alexander Skarsgard) and Jane Smith (Eiza Gonzalez) who were โtired of runningโ; ostensibly at the hands of enforcer Smiths portrayed by Wagner Moura and Parker Posey.
Later on, itโs implied that Skarsgard and Gonzalezโs duo botched enough missions to be punished by the organisationโs unforgiving three-strike failure system. And the same fate looked like it was on the cards for Donald Glover and Maya Erskineโs accidental lovebirds.
During the closing scenes of season 1, the Glover-Erskine Smiths managed to kill the Other John (Moura) before escaping to the safe room. Gloverโs John, however, is mortally wounded and bleeding out fast.
In something of a breakthrough character moment, Erskineโs Jane agrees to have kids, reveals her real name is Alana, and chooses to make a last stand against Other Jane (Posey) armed with a single bullet. Outside their building, three shots are ambiguously fired with no clarification regarding who prevailed. Though the death of the Glover-Erskine Smiths seems like a pretty clean exit, if you ask me.

โI think that thereโs definitely a lot more story to tell here,โ showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane told Entertainment Weekly.
โAnd I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, thatโs for sure.โ
She added: โI feel like weโve really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness, but I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP of Mr & Mrs Smith will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-em-up romance with a really interesting ending. And I think that the ending is something that will have a lot of people talking.โ
Do we know the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 cast?
At this stage, given not even Donald Glover and Maya Erskine have been guaranteed, itโs literally anybodyโs guess. If the series does take the anthology route, expect brand-new stars.
In the same discipline as FXโs The Bear season 2, the first season of Mr & Mrs Smith showcased enough restraint to use their stacked guest star lineup effectively without milking them to the point of exhaustion.
The short-lived appearances of Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez, and John Turturro, for example, served the ongoing story perfectly; while the single-episode arcs involving Ron Perlmanโs Toby Hellinger and Sarah Paulsonโs couples therapist were nothing short of delightful.
Whatever the case, more eyebrow-raising names will certainly be tapped.

When is the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 release date?
Assuming production kicks off soon, we can expect the Mr & Mrs Smith season 2 release date to be any time between early to mid-2025. This is also assuming the ever-busy Donald Glover can fit it within his professional schedule.
While itโs unclear how involved heโll be behind the scenes from this point forward, the multi-hyphenate talent recently announced more music from his Childish Gambino moniker, along with a world tour set to begin this August through to February 2025.
Suffice it to say, there are a lot of moving parts.
