Michael JordanTom BradyTiger Woods… and now, Roger Federer (again).

In the years since ESPN’s The Last Dance took the world by storm, documentarians have practically been tripping over themselves to produce borderline hagiographic retrospectives about the life and times of sporting greats. In 2024, Roger Federer will receive yet another feature-length documentary of his own, courtesy of Amazon Prime Video.

“Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends,” he explained, having officially retired back in 2022 at the age of 41.

“During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public.”

Federer added: “We captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey. I am happy to be partnering with Prime Video because of their vast global reach and significant presence in the film industry. This ensures that the story of my final days in tennis will resonate with both tennis enthusiasts and broader audiences worldwide.”

“This is an intimate follow-along through the final 12 days of Roger Federer’s illustrious career. Originally a home video never intended for public viewing, the film captures Federer at his most vulnerable and candid self, as he says goodbye to a game and the fans that shaped his life for the last two decades.”

According to Variety, the film is to be directed by Academy Award and BAFTA winner Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna, Diego Maradona) in collaboration with Joe Sabia (Vogue’s 73 Questions series); featuring interviews with rivals and friends alike of Roger Federer, including fellow “Big Three” players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as well as Andy Murray.

While Djokovic (24) and Nadal (22) have since edged out the Swiss maestro (20) in Grand Slam men’s singles titles, it certainly would not be a stretch to claim Federer is the GOAT of professional tennis: 320 weeks as the world #1 singles player in the ATP (a record 237 consecutively), 103 singles titles on the ATP Tour (the second most of all time), and over $130 million in prize money earned (the third most of all time).

Roger Federer’s dominance is best exemplified by his five consecutive US Open and Wimbledon titles. From 2003 to 2007 and 2004 to 2008, respectively, the man’s infallibility at both Centre Court and Flushing Meadows defined Open Era tennis in the noughties.
