Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia: Our Favourite Shows

— Updated on 29 January 2023

What a week it has been! After countless ubers, lots of champagne and 43 different shows, we can finally say, we conquered the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. The week was jam packed with some of Australia’s best designers showcasing their Resort 18 collections. Attended by the elite of the Australia fashion scene, we got a front row seat to all the action.

Here are our favourite shows of the week.

Dion Lee

We kicked off fashion week with international success, Dion Lee. One of the inspirations behind the collection was the Sydney Opera House, so it made total sense to have the iconic building as the backdrop for the first ever Dion Lee menswear collection. Already known for his cool luxe feel, Lee translated this into the menswear pieces keeping true to his tailored but relaxed design.

Justin Cassin

Jetsetter Justin Cassin found himself grounded in Sydney to showcase his first ever runway show. The show was opened by internationally renowned Aussie model, Jordan Barrett who flew in especially from LA for the occasion. Barrett was also joined by Former Sydney Swans AFL player Tom Derickx. The collection had a cool, wearable feel to it but was still on trend with a streetwear touch to everything.

Double Rainbouu

Headed by Mikey Nolan & Toby Jones, this acid trip show was definitely one for the fashion addicts. With models walking out in fuzzy slides and every colour of the ‘rainbouu’, the collection was bold, bright and rebellious. The show was also the launching the pad for their eyewear collaboration with Le Specs that launches in August and their knits created in partnership with WoolMark Company.

Katama by Garrett Neff

More than just a pretty face, American model Garrett Neff showcased his first runway at MBFWA in style. Hosted at the the Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool, the barefoot models walked the edges of the pool wearing military and nautical inspired mix of knits, swimwear, tees and shorts. The show ended with models lined up against the pools with a mammoth Navy ship serving as the backdrop.

Ten Pieces

It only made sense that the owner of Icebergs Dining Room, Maurice Terzini would showcase his brand Ten Pieces with Co-designer Lucy Hinckfuss at the Iconic Bondi stomping ground. Made in collaboration with the Woolmark Company, the brand showcased a collection inspired by youth gangs in the 70’s and industrial architecture of that era. The collection was raw, edgy and seasonless. The collections drops online in September.

Strateas Carlucci

One of the final shows of the week was Strateas Carlucci. The alternative brand showcased a mix of oversized suiting and tracksuit pieces hitting all the current trends. Mixed into the collection was a range of slogan tees with words like ‘devo’ and ‘suss’ printed on them. Were expecting to see these tees all over our Instagram feeds in the coming months.

PSEUDO

These guys weren’t officially on the fashion week list but their bold move in attempt to crash the Dion Lee show with their squad deserves a bit of recognition. The crazy, colourful bunch led by designer Joshua Mullane ended up being escorted out of the area by police and security after strutting through Circular Quay and making quite the scene.
